This dogs tail is usually lethal, it wags furiously almost 24/7

Yesterday, quite late he went quiet and i thought kept trying to sit and lick his bum. (not like him) Then he was a bit restless, didn't settle to sleep but kept moving round and switching position, When i took them into the garden for a wee before bed he just crept round with me almost cowering, when i checked his bum as he still appreared to be trying to get to it he cried, I'd held his tail up. Realised it's his tail that's the issue not his bum.
This morning he's quiet and holding it a bit weirdly, not tucked between his legs but away and down. no wag.
He did go in the river yesterday and in water. (I'm not actually aware if swimmers tail is literally named that because of swimming)

He's fine otherwise, It's definitely his tail, that's pretty obvious. I can't see any cuts etc
I read keep him warm and give anti inflammatories- I can do that, we have some for Spud our older dog. Would that be right? Poor boy :(

Again we’ve had one do it a couple of times, I think it’s less to do with the water and more to do with the sudden immersion in cold/ change from warm to cold. Give a bit of metacam if you’ve got it and should be good by tomorrow.

Penny's had this before, as has my SIL's Springer x Lab. Completley dead tail and feeling a bit sorry for themselves, they both came right within a couple of days. Hopefully nothing to worry about!

I may try a bit of paracetamol. I vaguely remember he once got the Metacam in his dinner by accident and the explosive poo after was not one to be repeated.

Thinking about it I'm not even sure he did swim, the old one did but he was certainly tearing round and submerged himself at one point in a flooded field- Its safe Its my hay field I know the footing, not quite sure what he did but disappeared for a split second at a high speed gallop, shook himself off and carried on but i wonder if it was that?

I’d give metacam if you have any, it’s very painful.
And you can massage the wag muscles either side of the root of the tail.

Just read your last reply. Half a paracetamol then! With food.

Is "wag muscles" a scientific term Clodagh? 🥰 I like it!
He's had a paracetamol. By the time he'd eaten all the stuff I hid it in and spat the tablet out he probably had an extra meal!

Paracetamol - stuffed deep into a quarter of a Babybel and tossed at the dog, who swallows it whole - in fact it just disappears without even being swallowed, just straight down the chute!

Works even better if you have two dogs and FOMO kicks in 😂 When my older boy was being medicated twice a day I trained them to come to the call of "medicine time". Used to amuse me every single time to see them galloping in and jostling for position 😂

Yeah tbh that's kind of how he ate it in the end, everyone had a bit of ham- him last. He's too clever to risk anyone else getting his ham so swallowed fast!
