Hi , what's best 4x4 for towing and every day use for a family of 4? I want something with a bit of oomph to get me up those hills when needed. I only tow with one pony with a double ifor Williams trailer. Thanks

I have a Honda CR-V (2015) and love it. Very economical and powerful enough to get me where I need to go with my 17hh and ifor 505

Worth looking at an Outlander. The tow capacity is fine for an Ifor plus pony, nice drive, reasonably economical plus added bonus of 7 seater if needed with family

Love the older version sorento. Was put off discoverys due to their issues. Shogun would also be a consideration.

I personally won't touch theses SUV types that can tow 2500 and everything is so close to that limit.

Subaru Forester, a wolf in sheeps clothing :) (Impreza 2l turbo engine) tows a trailer with one in, and a transit van stuck in deep mud ( the three men in it laughed when I offered to help them out of the trouble they had got themselves in) without even noticing them, with the added benefit of leaving boy racers for dead when not towing:)

*Sounds like stuck record*

Skoda Octavia Scout 2l 150 bhp manual diesel 4x4 Estate. High 40s mpg, tows to 2000kg, a real good all round drive, very comfortable and awesome tow vehicle. Takes 2 6'2" rear passengers. Done multiple 500 mile round trips to Devon recently in it, (not towing), great on motorway and equally at home on ridiculously narrow and hilly Devon lanes.

Interesting , I'm thinking of changing my kia sorento for an estate car
Do all these skodas tow 2t ?
My kia is the auto titan , tows 3.5t but I very rarely tow 2 horses so really only need a vehicle that will tow 2 or 2.2t
I prefer an estate car with havings 2 dogs as well

Not all the Octavias will tow 2000kg, most are less, so you need to check the model. Older ones also may tow less than the current range, ours is a 2015 reg and is the current model so ok for 2t.

The Scout is the ruggedised version with a raised ride height cf the regular Octavias. It has a no nonsense get-you-anywhere feel about it.

Great thanks
Will have a good look
I wasn't planning on changing car till next year but once I've got an idea in my head . . . . . . .

What's subaru like on mpg?

Mmmm...... I've got a Subaru Forester, and my understanding of their towing capability was that they're really something or nothing, i.e. would be able to tow a pony say, travelled singly, but nothing else?

Dunno if anyone else can clarify?

Sorry can't help with the mpg...... just keep bunging petrol in the thing and hoping for the best....... :)

You need to know exact model and year as they are all over the place.

When I had a Legacy the salesman at a show was talking to me about the Forester which was the new model. Towing capacity was only around 1200kg, less than the Legacy, but the newer model is a bigger vehicle so might be more./
