Best 4x4 for under £6000

After having a bit of a time with our last car we have decided to try again and find something that won't spend most of its time in a garage being fixed (we have had a hellish time!). Let me know your thoughts both for good vehicles and bad. For me realiablity and fuel usage is the most important thing :-). Thank you guys

Isuzu trooper.
 
Kia Sorento, the older model though as has a higher towing capacity than the new one.

Mine is 9 yrs old and has been super reliable, tows like a dream, economical for insurance and fuel, and also comfortable as a driving car.
 
Hmm, well I guess it depends what you are wanting the 4x4 to do – do you need one to tow with or not for instance?
I can’t imagine any decent 4x4 is going to be very fuel efficient with the sort of budget you have as you’ll be looking at the older models that are a bit more thirsty and also likely to be in the higher tax bands.
My sister picked up a 57 reg Nissan X-Trail for abut £8K and that was the higher spec model so does have a fair bit of kit for your money BUT I don’t think it’s especially fuel efficient. You could tow with it though.
I used to love my Suzuki Vitara as there’s not many other 4x4s in that price range that are actually a capable off-roader. The DDis versions have a low ratio gear box and, if you ever do truly need it it’s blooming fab! That car wasn’t stopped by anything road/weather wise!! You wouldn’t be able to tow an awful lot with it though.
 
My Nissan Terrano was under your budget, it is a 2004 LWB 3ltr - tows for England and drives like a car, happy enough at motorway speeds. As a diesel it does getting on for 30 on a trip. They don't make them any more but there are some good low mileage ones still around.
 
Can vouch for the Isuzu Trooper, I had a 1995 one and it was one of the best cars I have had. I now have a Kia Sorrento, beautiful car and you get a lot for your money. Its 10yrs old, looks like new as was a pensioners car so hardly any mileage, just used to tow a caravan through Summer time. It was also under £4k ! Not towed the trailer with it yet as not had it long but have a friend who tows with one and shes very happy with it.
 
I have a Trooper and it tows nicely - also gets me out of VERY muddy places with a trailer no probs where some of the "soft roader" newer type 4x4 struggle.....I also highly recommend a Diahatsu fourtrack - AWESOME pulling machines and I'd have another tomorrow if I could find a late model locally at a reasonable price!!!!
 
We have a jeep cherokee crd. Its good that it can tow upto 3.5 ton, and its easy to drive. Down side is that its juicy on the diesel and we've had nothing but trouble with the injectors. Ended up doing 40 mph on the motorway the other day as the power just goes. So if you look at one of these go for something no older than around a
07 plate when they sorted the issue out!
 
You can't beat a Mitsubishi Shogun. We've got a 2001 swb 3.2L it goes anywhere in, any condition and pulls several tonne with ease. We've had it 6 years and apart from general wear and tear its not gone wrong.
 
We have a KIA after a lot of research and a previous very expensive 4x4, KIA sorrento has been amazing, very economical so we use it all the time not just for towing, and has capacity to tow 3500kg.
 
Another vote for Mits. Shogun. I've had my 3L V6 (auto and i love it for ease of towing) and yes, on/under your budget. Have had 2 shoguns in the past and they've been great buys,..i'm very confident that my car is upto the towing requirements and apart from the usual visits for mot/service and the odd replacement of through wear and tear, they are good 4 x 4's in my experience.

I keep thinking 'oooo shall i upgrade?'...and then think...well why waste my money when i have something that's up to the job and doing it well!! LOL

If i do upgrade in the future though,...i'll probably go for another shogun!!
 
I had the same budget as you and was upgrading the best 4x4 ever my £500 bargain of a ford maverick/terrano, the car was the best thing ever! But my OH wanted to spoil me and 96' purple beast of a car was pushed out :(

We looked the the kia sorroto-lovely car and I did really like them however all the ones we found were a mess, they just didn't look tidy enough for me. The old beast was tidier! Even upping the budget to £7000 the body work just didn't age well.

We then looked at x-trail- hated the in side of it, and thought the overall look was old. And not huge pulling power.

Went to see a stunning Nissan terrano, all black and like new, as we were viewing it the chap selling it fell in love with it again and took it off the market :(

I did have a discovery for a while, great car, very gusty on fuel and it did have minor issues all most every week, so that was sold!

Then I found a jeep cherrokee- in mint condition, it's been fab, get 40mpg. It's big enough to fit everything in, we've got the crd which is leather with lots of extras. It's a 56plate and we paid £3500, so well above the budget!
 
Costypop - we also had a discovery and it was a royal pain in the bum which was painful to admit for my OH as he's a land rover nut and was extremely thirsty and forever falling to bits!!
 
Isuzu Trooper...but NOT an import. They will get you through any ground conditions and have the best turning circle you will ever come across! Tow really well but not that great on fuel as big gutsy engines.
 
Another vote for Kia Sorento - I picked up my 05 plate for £7,000 - was in great condition and low mileage and is fantastic for towing - juicy but then it's a 4 x 4 and I used to drive a mini so it feels juicier for that reason! But I love mine - automatic and leather seats makes it a nice pleasant drive.
