Might be convincing husband to get a 4x4 for towing. What do people recommend, noting that cost is an issue! Probably second hand or new on finance.
Best 4x4 with most value for money for towing?

Ideally I would have liked a Toyota Land Cruiser but they were out of my budget unless I wanted one older than the Isuzu Trooper I was seeking to replace (which was 17 years old!) , I bought a Mitsubishi Shogun in the end, I feel it performs really well as a tow car and for general driving, it's not terribly thirsty fuel wise and have had it over a year with no (KNOCKING WOOD) issues. So, I'd recommend the Land Cruiser or Shogun!

I can't check as had to send my licence off for something, but just a regular post 97 driving licence (passed test 2014).

Isuzu D-Max 3.5 tonne pulling power! Pulls my Irish Draughts in a Richardson Supreme Excel like there is nothing there. Had a Toyota Hilux before and the D-Max knocks it into a cocked hat.

If you are only going to tow one horse which weighs say 550 kg then you can do on your current B (no B+E) licence BUT the the plated GVW of the vehicle added to the plated MAM of the trailer cannot total more than 3500 kg
An example of this ....
Nissan Xtrail 4x4 with GVW of 2200
Bateson Derby trailer at 675 empty with plated MAM of 1700 but down plated to 1300 via contact with Bateson
Leaves 625 for the trailer load/horse
2200 + 1300 = 3500 so ok for B licence towing
Getting a vehicle with too high a GVW can make it impossible to tow a horse trailer on a B licence
