Any reccomendations on the best hat for low level competions? Am I best to get a skull cap and switch silks or is there something I could use that would be suitable for most low level dressage / Showing?
My current hat is light weight and fab for hacking/long distance but not suitable for much else. So much on the market. Thankyou in advance

One that fits :wink3: seriously, find somewhere local to you where you can try on several different types to see which fits the best. In terms of skull vs peaked hat, if you are planning to go XC at some point, then go for the former. Otherwise a peaked hat will be fine, there are lots of smart looking ones out there these days. Make sure it is up to recent standards (PAS015 / SNELL) and you will be fine to wear it at a competition.

I’ve got such a small head I find skull caps don’t look as nice they seem to be more chunky. Maybe some come up differently. Thankyou

Best will in the world. PAS015 and SNELL are hardly the same standard!

OP - what price is your head? To you and your family. Hat standards are not all the same. Have a look at this http://www.beta-uk.org/media/safety...ts A5 2 pager to go as insert in nehellip.pdf

I would always say get the highest standard hat you can that actually fits you properly. SNELL is the highest possible standard at the moment - but it does produce a fairly chunky hat. Understandable when you think it is the only hat standard tested against impact with a horse's hoof or a sharp surface like a kerb. HS1 are the classic SNELL supplier but not suited to all headshapes. But Charles Owen now also produce SNELL standard hats in a different headshape which might work for you.

You don't have to opt for an up to standard hat if you are not competing. But accidents happen at every level. For me I cannot understand why someone would opt for safety wear which is not to the highest possible standard. You only have one head!

Where did I say they were?! I was referencing two of the acceptable standards for RC/PC/BE etc... The most important thing is that the hat fits, PAS015 is still a good standard to have if you can't find a SNELL hat that fits!

I have a Charles Owen Ayrbrush hat & love it! But because it fits & is lightweight. I compete in mine locally, but don't show admittedly.

I tried the Gatehouse but it just didn't fit. I do too many miles and hours in the saddle to want to wear an ill fitting hat.
