See a few mentions for Wiltshire but I would pick the location very carefully in this county if you're looking for great outriding. I've moved 3 times in the county and find it very limited for off-road riding and on-road hacking through villages is like riding through suburbs at best. If you're after lots of competition though and don't much care for leisure riding, you could do worse than planting yourself near West Wilts EC.

Actually, being totally honest, as you're looking to leave your current area as it's becoming too built up, I would strongly recommend that you don't locate around West Wilts for riding out - we are in that area and out riding is utterly shocking. Infant it is so bad compared to my childhood memories of riding around rural Worcestershire that my husband and I are making serious plans to move us all, including Neddy, over to Portugal. Now that's a thought...what about Worcestershire?

I thought Gloucestershire came out on top in the survey????? Very horsey area, great bridlepaths - and most of the drivers slow down for horses. Trouble is, it is very expensive, intheCotswold area that is. Down on plains would be less expensive, but I don't know what the riding is like.

To get cheaper is going to mean going more rural/remote because anything that is "commuter" distance from the nearest large town and employment area is going to be pricey.
