Calling all mummy dog walkers... Wondered if any of you could recommend a better baby carrier than the Baby Bjorn standard one. We brought it based on rave reviews but I have reallll back ache after our morning and afternoon dog walks. Freya is 15 weeks and just over 1stone, but this should still support her comfortably. She loves it in the carrier, and has now started facing forward much to her delight, but my back reallly hurts. Ive had it fitted properly, once in store and once at the health centre, and am still extremely uncomfortable. I am a fit and active person and need a great carrier as the dogs are needing their walkies - 2 a day about 2 miles each. Grateful if any of you could let me have some advice.... Thnx

Can't help I'm affraid but my mum used to walk five dogs and me in a pushchair and she walks miles with them over fields, rather steep hills, up and along dis-used railway lines and some rocky patches, could you not do that?

Do you carry her on your back or front? I think a back carrier places less strain on the back, but ideally you should be on all fours! We are not fully adapted to walking upright, hence the back problems.

Well done your mum! We have too many stiles and gateways etc on the land plus most of our walks are on the beach lol. x

I can't speak from experience as I haven't had my baby yet, but as I'm a pregnant dog owner, I've been doing a bit of research on baby carriers for dog walking lately!

The Wilkinet is a popular choice, apparently. There are also lots of wrap type ones which are supposed to be very comfortable, but look a bit of a fiddle - I am told by a mother of 4 that they are easy once you get used to them though.

There is one website which has a whole load of different types of carriers and gives a critique on all of them: www.littlepossums.co.uk

I'll be wary of the Bjorn one now then!

When my baby was really young I had a Wilkinet which is a bugger to put on to start with, but really supportive on long walks. The only disadvantage is you can not breast feed with it on, so you have to time your walks well. When my younguns could sit well unaided I had a framed back pack carrier Tomy I think which was great as OH could use it as well without looking cissy. When he got to heavy for me to carry like that I got one of those bum bag carriers and carried him on my hip when he was tired of walking. My walks were short for a while....
