Saddler is coming tomorrow and hopefully (touch wood, lob salt over left shoulder, spin widdershins) I will have a replacement for my condemned Albion.

It's been 3 weeks since my saddler's eyebrows went into his hairline and the saddle went away for investigation. I am loving bareback riding, and can manage walk and trot on my comfy cobbus. I want to do more, but I don't want to make his back sore, as I've a stiff hip and am not a skinny minny.

Any recommendations for a bareback pad that won't break the bank, since the new saddle probably will?

If you can find a second hand Christ lammfelle I found it so secure I backed ponies using it! But it is not that cheap. I have tried a very plain pad and it was the same as being bareback, if anything I felt less secure as it could slip a bit. Not worth it

I have a Christ Lammfelle too, it is fabulous. I will be selling it soon as I am now old and prefer an actual saddle, but I rode Jay out hacking in it. It has padding for the horse as well as a knee roll and a cantle pad to keep the rider secure. You can even add stirrups (I never did) because of the extra padding. I would highly recommend.

I den love my Christ Lamfelle, though my sister has stolen it at the moment. But they are expensive. I don't know if there is a cheaper substitute that is similar. A lot of bareback pads give you less stability than riding without, which is obviously not ideal!

Definitely a CL. They come up second hand really reasonably, £100 to £150 usually for used ones. They last forever and are so comfortable.

Always fancied the Christ Lammefelle, but never tried it. I have a Thorn Pad with a hip saver on top. I've used it on my Exmoors and now plan to use it on my cob. A little more traditional looking than the CL and I've seen people do all sorts in theirs, including hunting, jumping and showing.

The CL are like hen's teeth secondhand. I used to ride my Exmoor in a best friend one (the cheaper model) and it gave a little padding and was very grippy-he was completely round and it never slipped on him. The other one I quite like the look of is the Thinline one-some use these with a treeless or shimmed numnah underneath it.

If it's one that might fit a big cob and a tubby tall rider, can you bear me in mind when/if you're selling it please? :)

Agree a CL. I caved in and bought one last year and it is sooo much better than anything else I’ve tried. He’s a sharp pony and feeling secure is a priority! Not tried stirrups with it yet.
