My horse is not a true box walker just a nosy ar$e with a window at the back of his stable and the door at the front. Window over looks his field, public footpath, canal and the carpark, door opens onto yard of about 15/20 stables court yard type thing. He also drags his feet. His stable has full rubber matting and about 2 bags worth of LWP at the back. I am moving him to a quieter yard with about 16 horses instead of 40ish here in the hope that he will settle.

So what do you use for your box walkers/messy horses?

Any ideas welcome

my old man is exactly the same his hay is at back next to a window and his door looks at all the stables and he can also see all fields. he spends alot of time inside as he is a wuss and prefers that...i dont but everyone brings him in if he looks sad!!
He is on a quiet yard but still does it altho less than on previous yard. he has rubber mats also and he is on a deep straw bed, which aslong as its kept fairly deep and mucked out daily he doesnt shuffle it to the floor, he is on that mainly as its easier tried shavings and they ended up everywhere cos he dragged his feet through them and made it difficult to deep litter it!
Hope you sort your problem.

I had Lil on LWP last winter but she stirred them up into a smelly soup. I'm swapping her onto straw this winter as its so much cheaper.

My horse was VILE on LWP, every other horse on the yard would be ¼ of wheel barrow of stuff coming out in the morning and he would take two! Everyone used to complain about him as you couldn’t just skip him out as he’d turned everything into mush.

Moved him onto straw when we moved and he is MUCH better, the deeper the bed the better too and he seems much happier to lie down and have a snooze (and doesn’t wake up stinking of wee!). He does have a habit of hiding poo’s but at least when I do eventually find them they’re whole and not trodden everywhere.

Also stable rugs didn’t get half as stinky with straw (although I smell VILE!)

I use allbed, its the same as easibed but cheaper £5.50 per bale. Mine box walks like mad and this is the only stuff that can put up with his walking while keeping a deep layer so that when he stops there is still enough to lay on. I use 1/2 bale a week with 3 full mucks a week as he doesnt wee alot. its hard to find but all my local suppliers have changed from easibed to this now and its a lot cheaper than shavings £8.10 cheapest easibed is £8.90 aorund me. i cant use straw as its to dusty for my boy

I have a simple solution for my box walker - he lives out 24/7

no more stress for him, no more mucking out stable where it looks like he's been having a dirty protest lol

Aubiose!! preferable with the wood pellets under it. It is so soft and silky it doesnt drag with their feet, which as the owner of a hunter who staff at the old livery yard hinted they would like to go on strike rather than muck out, I have plenty of experience.

Its very stable underfoot.

NB is the stable big enough, only say that as my chap improved hugely when he was put into a much bigger box?

Thanks for all the suggestions, i've got my fingers crossed that he will be better at the new yard. I would love him on a big straw as I love them but I don't think the yard is aloud straw.
