I'm going to a stay away show in a couple of weeks. We're only staying one night and have been told the stables will be empty when we get there. I've checked with the venue and they don't mind what type of bedding we use/ bring. In the past I've used chopped straw as it fluffed up well so only needed a couple of bales and it was cheap but it doesn't seem to be quite so cheap now! Is this still the best option or any other recommendations for a cheap bedding? I don't need it to be particularly absorbent or easy to muck out etc as it's only for one night.

I would use the big bedmax, I don't like them for everyday use as they're not the most absorbant, but for a stay away they're good as you get a fair size bed out of not many bales and they're some of the cheapest shavings, and they're easy/quick to muck out.

It does add a lot to a be night stay putting down a full bed. I generally take whatever shavings are in stock and try to bag up clean to bring back.

What’s the floor in the stables? If it’s grass or mats, I’d just use a bale of whatever is cheapest, probably Bedmax or small flake shavings.

Thanks both, I'll see if the local tackshop have any large flake shavings in and what they're charging for them. I'm completely out of touch because I only use straw pellets at home and other stayaways have provided some bedding and only allowed more of the same to be used.

They haven't said what the floor is so I'm assuming it will be worse case scenario and hard and so will take more rather than less with me.

It does make it add up! I've been lucky recently and they've already had some bedding in already so it's not been so bad but I think I will bag this lot up and bring it home, it's just a complete waste for one night otherwise.
