Hi there I have an unruly 3 year old warmblood who I'll be braking in later this year, but to lead about and lead off my other horse out up the lanes/roads I take him out in a bridle, he currently has an eggbutt french link in, but is constantly trying to get the leadrope or me or my other horse in his mouth!! He's always been cheeky like this, btw it's playful behaviour not nasty. Anyway just wondered if a different bit might keep him busier, something like the key bit or cherry roller or copper roller? Any thoughts?????

Try a loose ring snaffle/french link instead of the eggbutt, so he can move the bit around in his mouth more without a fixed cheek.

A key bit could also help but i imagine you probably have a loose ring already so its worth trying that before going and buying a new key one :)

Having owned a horse for 8 years that has a seemingly unfixable busy mouth/tongue habit that is infuriating I have tried probably every bit out there. My advice would be to stay away from keys (reckon this is what caused his problem), links or anything he can play with. I am currently using a Myler wide ported bit. I have tried it before and hate the feel it gives but for some reason, this time it seems to be working. It isnt a cure but he is definately becoming quieter in his mouth. My boy too grabs leadropes, so I bought one that is a chain near the clip, almost stopped him doing it as he musntnt like chewing chain!
Ive found fixed cheeks seem better, a baucher/hanging cheek better still as I think my boy cant stand the bit on his tongue and is kind of trying to get it off. He justs feels heavier and dead to the mouth in this sort of bit. I also find swapping after a few weeks to a different mouthpiece, then back again curves his evasions.

He is slightly parrot mouthed, has a fleshy tongue but everything else has been checked and is fine.

Yeah, he's like a big puppy dog. Well behaved, then gets bored and tries to play by mouthing on the leadrope, me or anything else nearby!!! Am sure it's his age and/or possibly teething? But wandered if a different bit would keep him occupied more? I have a loose ring German hollow mouth which I might try? And will get a chain top leadrope.
