Hi everyone, I'm new to this board and look forward to hopefully getting some advice. My ex racer is very strong and when I ask for a canter he throws his head down and pulls really hard! I know he just wants to gallop as thats all he knows but I am reschooling him and he is doing well in the slower gaits but he is knocking me off balance and I have to battle with him to keep him under control. I was wondering if I should change his bit to a pelham or something as I don't want to fight with him all the time. He gave me whip lash today and its getting really annoying. I have tried him in a few snaffles, french link etc. Please help!
Thanks
Anita

I would then work him on the lunge until he learns to balance himself better, as he is obviously struggling. Lots of work in canter staying off his back, not worrying about an outline, just concentrating on balance and getting him to steady himself, he sounds like he is very on the forehand and I wouldnt advise using a stronger bit to correct something that will come with time and work

If I am taking my ex racer for fast work, I tend to use a 3 ring dutch gag, on the 2nd ring down. I also use a martingale. I find that this combination works well. But befrore I did any fast work, I spent a long time just schooling him the school. I also studied racing to see how the jockeys stopped their horses. I tried their technique in the school and found that I had instant brakes.

Good luck re-schooling. Once they are re-schooled they are a joy to ride

You might be better off with a stronger noseband, and just keeping a snaffle in. For example a grackle - that's what they use alot on the racing yard where I keep my horse. Seems to give them less to fight against.
