Daughty has a lovely fell, he came in a wilkie, I took him out of that as when I was schooling him he just took a hold and it was like riding a concrete block, swopped him into a loose ring team up bit which is on the whole much better, can feel his mouth but his way of evading work is to powertrot and he still takes a hold.
Also out hacking, generally he is fine but can be strong if not in front or on way home, not going out of chosen pace but power walk/trot so daughter (or me ) has to haul on his mouth, which obv she hates doing, and he will yaw to evade.
she is very nervous and although has good hands in so far as they are independant of her seat, tends to ride with a shorter contact than me, so I dont want anything too strong.
Was thinking of a mullen mouth pelham, maybe two reins with one knotted on neck just to give an extra brake when needed? just to avoid hanging on to his mouth really
All suggestions welcomed

hard to come with an outright solution not knowing the pony but a couple of things did spring to my mind. You say he power trots so suggests that he leans on the bit? does he wear a flash? you also are considering a pelham-as he is a native, how much room does he actually have in his mouth? I personally find the pelham a bit fixed when trying it previously. My mare can be very strong but due to poll issues, can't wear anything with any pressure there so she hacks out in a waterford. My gelding (ISH) would like to bury his head on the floor and, while not a strong tank, does like to lean so I ended up with a gag for him - fulham cheeks and a nodule. He schools in a NS loose ring though.

I did play around with a lot of different bits before ending up with the above for mine - should also say (in my case) that both my horses are quite big (16.3) and strong. I always felt smug on the previous horse whom I could hack out in his snaffle.. those were the days!

thanks lucie

No dont use a flash, though could I suppose.

Yes he does lean on the bit when powertrotting.

Most of the time could ride him on the buckle in a snaffle out hacking, just when he wants to walk or trot that little bit faster than you do, want to avoid the pulling.
only being enthusiastic bless him :)
