I currently ride my horse in a loose ring french link snaffle bit but I was wondering if there was a less severe bit? He doesn't always accept the bit, often clenches his jaw and refuses to soften, I wondered if there was another bit which would encourage him to chew and soften?
When jumping I ride him in a french link dutch gag and when the reins are on the second ring he will work in a frame but I understand that he isn't using his muscles correctly when he does this as he is still leaning on the bit for support and his hind quarters aren't engaged. I also don't like the severity of the bit but need it because of how strong he can be when competing.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, ideally I'd like to find a bit which would be gentle and not cause too much pressure.

I went from FL to Neue Schule team-up. The lozenge is a kinder shape and my boy seems to have settled nicely with it. I'm sure they're many more but my budget would only go so far. Maybe try one online - you can chat it through with bitting experts and have 30 days or so.

A Myler comfort snaffle did it for my lad who is a bit of a tank in a snaffle and the dutch gag makes the corners of his mouth sore
