Best bit of horsey advice you've ever been given?

"SMILE!"

After a bad experience and a long break out of the saddle this is one of the first things my new instructor said to me, I was riding really tense until she started saying things to make my smile, instantly I felt more secure in the saddle and apparantly my position was noticeably much better, to quote "You look like a different rider!", it stuck in my mind and so whenever I have a wobbly-moment now I force myself to think of something nice and put a smile on my face. :)

Don't buy another horse until you can ride the one you've got to its full potential.

After a tentative comment on wanting something a little more capable.

It's meant to be fun,if you are not enjoying it,it is an expensive way to be miserable.

My husband has just laughed wryly at the 'just did a big hole and throw money in it' quote.

Given to us fairly recently by fellow long-suffering DIY livery, with regard to the cost of horse-ownership- NEVER ADD IT UP!

My husband has just laughed wryly at the 'just dig a big hole and throw money in it' quote.

I remember reading about a chap telling an old Yorkshire farmer he was buying a horse and getting the response "Eeh lad, you'll end up with rags for your a*se"!! :D

Listen to your first instinct/gut feeling when dealing with horses as often they can prove to be correct

When you riding and the horse makes a funny unusual whinny/noise, get off quick.... hopefully I will never have a horse collapse on me but this came from someone whose horse collapsed and died with heart problems. She said the horse in question also looked back at her.
