Best bit to break a TB

Another post for a friend....

Does anybody know the best bit to use when breaking a TB? (I have no idea about breaking horses myself!)

Yep, snaffle or french link, rubber if he has soft mouth!

I have never used a breaking bit.

It's all about trial and error
Some prefer metal mouth pieces such as a loose ring with french link or lozenge whereas some prefer a metal mullen mouth snaffle
Nathe bits seem to work well with babies

whatever bit suits the horse!!! they are all individuals, i would start in a rubber snaffle and go from there.

Have found neue schule training bits can work well on young TB's

I used a french link snaffle - she's still in it now

Mine is in a loose ring snaffle

Always start with the softest.
Happy mouths a the best but some tend to chew them!

Have you got someone else breaking the horse for you? If so, presumably thay will have eperience of what has worked before.....??? Usually one would want to start with the bit that you would hope to be riding it out in - namely a snaffle, I wouls have thought?

An old tip is to use a leather but if the mouth is very sensitive.

I would and have always used either a lozenged snaffle (full cheek or loose ring) or a nathe bit for babies. Normally the lozenged to strat with, and then the nathe to teach them about the contact if they need something less fussy.
