I have a 5 year old gypsy cob, who is currently ridden in a small loose ring jointed snaffle. He has been fine in this and still is most of the time, however when we get out onto the fields he becomes extremely strong. Today I suddenly had no brakes and when trying to turn him a circle to slow down he slipped on cowpat and we both hit the deck (luckily ok, just bruised pride).
I have been advised to put him in a Tom Thumb copper roller bit by my friend who used it on her horse as a snaffle, but with the extra leverage for breaks.
I am wondering what others thoughts are in terms of the best bit which will help. I am an experienced rider with soft hands, so don’t want to make his mouth hard by starting to pull on the snaffle, but think he is now too strong for this bit.
thanks
