[h=2]Hi there,[/h]

I am about to move the horses out of livery and have them at home so that I can do them myself...

I'm getting myself in a muddle with what kind of bedding I want… I know I don't want straw as one of my horses would eat and eat and eat it!

So my question is what shavings do you all recommend? Big or small flake? I want something as close to dust free as possible and easy to keep the beds clean as I'm very ocd lol!

Thank you! x

Hi i swear by Hunters, they are a nice size flake and not dusty, they are also bigger sized bales than most brands. Ive used bedmax before with the big flakes but i find they are so good at absorbing the wet. Good luck with having the horses at home, wish i could have mine with me.

General chip is lovely and white, soft and very absorbent and packed really tightly so goes a long way. I use it as banks and edges around a premium wood pellet middle as she very very wet!

I use laysoft and I really quite like it. The pooh tends to sit on top and it's pretty absorbent. I find that it makes a good firm bed and does not appear to be dusty at all, plus unlike shavings, it doesn't stick to his lordships mane and tail. One of the ladies on the farm converted from shavings to laysoft. In my area it is cheaper than a bale of shavings however at £6.90 a bale it's not as cheap as straw.

Bluefrog comes from Northern Ireland, never thought I would change from Bedmax but I used so much less shavings as super absorbent very impressed

I used it once at an away competition and thought it was lovely but wasn't sure for every day use! Did find it v easy to keep clean :)

I used to use Bed down excel when my horses were on DIY... smells really nice too!

Now on full livery and they use Album woodshavings mixed with Bedmax.

i prefer hunters, used to use bedmax but the big flakes dont fall through the shavings fork so you end up taking more out than you need to! Hunters also make a big fluffy bed

I used Laysoft for the wet / messy horse as it's very absorbant and sticks to / coats the droppings well.
The clean horse has Bedmax.

Hunters! My boy was on bedmax but for a dirty horse like him you need to use about double the usual amount as it's not very good at absorbing wet. I also prefer the smaller shavings in general, I just think they are more absorbent - larger surface area to volume ratio etc.
