What's the best calmer for a flighty 9yr old TB? He is prone to what seems like panic attacks and gets very nervous, working himself up into a state of chaotic anxity!
I have no experience with 'everyday' calmers except the equine america magnesium one which to be honest I didnt see any vast improvement from.
For 'one offs' ie shows I have found oxyshot worked particuarly well with my ex racer, not just calm but so much softer in her work - I have heard i doesnt work for all though and you have to follow it to the letter ie timing and when they last ate.
Other than that, the only thing that keeps my tb happy and calm and works is being ridden every (or nearly every!) day. She is a much pleasanter and happier person for it!
Long term Hilton Herbs Temperamend works well for my tb, for quick fixes I found that both the superkalm paste and the oxyshot fizzed him up even more!
3rd vote for Global herbs supercalm. My TB mare is much more laid back on it, and has had a recent period of box rest/short term move to new yard with no turnout, so I have it well tested.
Unfortunately Global Herbs didn't do it for my boy. It really is a case of trying everything as what suits one doesn't suit another. And of course feeding extra magnesium if the horse isn't lacking in it sinn't going to do any good anyway (although too much magnesium won't harm as it just get passed out!). Although magnesium based I'm trying out Top Spec's calmer (only done 4 days so too early to say) which has tryptophan in it. Anyone else tried this?
have you assessed what is setting these attacks off. i have worked with tbs and own one myself. my advice would be to review what you are feeding him. before you start pumping full of more things that to be honest may not work!
Also if you do try anything make sure you give plenty of time to see if it works. again montior when he freak outs.
