Can anyone recommend a calmer for bringing a horse that had 8 months of rest (due to injury) back to work?

Couldn't do much, with her rearing up, etc. which would not be good for her at all!

I use magnitude, by equine america. It definitely does something as I took him off it once.. LOL. Problem is with all calmers you add to feed, I think they do take a good few weeks to build up in their system for a noticable difference.

You can get the paste ones, that you give a tube before working, not sure how good they are. Alternatively change her feed for a week or two? Just until she gets the idea.

Just had similar problem with the little pony I look after, 3 months of box rest had turned him into a demon! Started off with turn out to get his energy off. Then after a week moved onto lungeing, he would go loopy for a few circuits.. but just pushed him on, tbh he didnt have enough enough muscle to keep it up for long! 3rd lungeing session he had forgotten all about misbehaving. Just making sure to keep up his exercise and turnout, so far so good.

In my experience, calmers don't change spooky horses, or those with pent up energy, but they can have a gentle overall effect.

Personally I'd sedate with something like Sedalin for a few days, then try a calmer when she's a bit more used to the great outdoors. We use Sedalin then Nupafeed for our boy who seems to be addicted to box rest. Expensive but worth it imo.

Tried Sedalin before when she had boxrest last year - it did work - but only when she was a bit overdosed.

Stupid thing is she had always been naturally on the difficult side, and when we finally (!!!) got somewhere backing her last year, i.e. I finally got on her and rode her around the school... stupid injury that vets told us to ignore came back to bite us and now, it seems, we're back to square one.

Thing is, she is nice enough to handle, but seems to be totally against working again - like I would be any different, lol.

Put my mare on NAF Magic after 10 months of box rest for injury. She is naturally spooky and was getting to be a handful walking in hand at times. Now started ridden work and the calmer does seem to have made a difference. We do ride out in company and the only time she has a bit of a boing is when we see horses in fields, especially if they come running to see us. She doing very well and Im finding that when shes a little tired towards the end of our ride, (which isnt very far at the mo) shes definitely more chilled.

I used sedaline for first few days after my horse did a ligament then used the nettex carl hester calmer daily -i think it helped him as he didnt seem as nuts in the field! Good luck -its a nightmare trying to keep them sane and sensible -especially at this time of year!

Sedalin for a couple od days and bring the dose down and get her on the loading dose of Nupafeed, we find that works well but again will in my opinion not change them that much if they are hot heads anyway
