Best camera?

I love taking pictures of my horses but its come to the point where my iphone camera is better than my actual camera! but i want something much more better quality. I took photos this weekend thinking they would be great on the camera i have now and they were crap! so does anybody have any suggestions?

Nikon D90 with a decent lense is what we use for our equine photography.
My cousin who is a professional equestrian photographer, his camera body alone is £5,200!! without lense, flash etc!
