best car/4x4 for towing 1600kg max? (fuel)

There would have been politer ways of pointing out that some aspects of this website may be incorrect !

However the recommended towing limit is 85% of the tow cars kerb weight and must not exceed the MAM, and the combined total of the ladened vehicle and trailer must not exceed the GTW. Obviously you must tow within your Driving Licence's limits.
This is the polite way of saying it .....

The 85% RECOMMENDED towing rule is for caravans only and not for any other type of trailer. This is due to their design being big lightweight bubbles of air which are prone to be caught by various weather conditions and stabilisation issues
The actual recommendation is for the caravan not to be more than 85% of the actual weight of the towing vehicle at the time of towing it and not the kerbweight but many use the kerbweight because it is a constant figure

If the 85% rules was relevant to all other forms of towing then what would be the point of manufacturers designing their vehicles to tow up to 3500 kgs when the kerb and GVW (MAM) are well under that?

The law is that..
The vehicle GVW must not be exceeded
The trailer plated MAM must not be exceeded
The GTW (actual weight of everything) must not be exceeded

I believe this is only the case for caravans.

Edited- I mean the 85% part!

You might be right with this, the only "officially recognised" websites lump caravans and trailers together and state "85% recommended" with the legal limits being stated as MAM and GTW.
