Hi I was wondering what is the best car for towing… but I am on a tight budget in the region of around £10k. I just want something that can tow around 1800-2000kg to be safe. It’s for one horse only but he’s a big one at 17.2hh irish draught (not sure on exact weight but around 800kg is my estimate) so 1600kg to tow including trailer, plus extras. I also would prefer something with mileage less than 40,000 and not older than 2015-2016. As you can tell with my requirements I don’t have a whole lot of room to be picky. But can anyone recommend a smaller suv/pickup type or perhaps a sedan that could work?

Your budget is bigger than mine was, so I am sure you will find something! We ended up compromising on age, but sticking to low mileage and a robust make of car.

Have a look for a ssangyong rexton, you'll probably be able to find one that fits your age and mileage requirements for less than 10k and that model (I'm thinking the 2.0 litre diesel) can tow 3 tonnes

Whatever you get, make sure it is big enough to cope with the combined weight of trailer and horse, particularly if your horse should shift his weight suddenly. An older-than-you-would-like Landcruiser would be a good vehicle, and the fuel consumption is not as scary as you might think. Friend tows a caravan just about everywhere with his, and says it is the best for the job.
