Hi,

I am aware of the legalities with towing a trailer on just a B license I.e. no more than 3500kg combined MAM of car and trailer so I was wondering what are the best cars that fit this description i.e. have a MAM of under 2100kg? I will be getting a new model ifor Williams single horse trailer (unladen weight 720kg) and my horse is a 16hh TB so would weight around the 550/575kg mark.

What are the best cars that could tow my trailer and horse without having to take my B+E test just yet?

Both of mine do well, I also have a single ifor. I started out with a 2.0tdi(the top of the spec model) Ford Focus estate car which done really well then wanted an upgrade so went for the BMW X1. You would need to downplate the trailer for both of them to keep you within the 3500kg though.

I think there’s a Skoda that’s been ranked really good on here before.

I tow my single Ifor with 2 litre TDi C-Max zetec. My single Ifor trailer is from 2004 so has an unladen weight of 770kgs and had mine downplated to 1500kgs. The kerb weight of my car is 1520kgs and GVM of my car is 1990kgs so safe and legal all around and is under 3500kgs limit for a B-license with my 16.1 TB x ID in the trailer. Plenty of power, had to do emergency stops in mine when idiots have pulled out in front of me, etc. I was looking the new single Ifors at YHL and was impressed especially with the weight of them, really important with rising fuel prices! May upgrade in the future.

You’ll probably find that you’ll have to have the trailer downplated whatever car you decide.

If you’re looking for new model cars, the choice isn’t great now as many seem to have (in my view) unnecessary extra weight- such as extra seats. I do like a 4x4 though so maybe that narrowed my choice. If you’re happy to go with 2wd, there might be more choice. My Mazda CX-5 is fantastic for towing my Ifor 403. Before that, I had an old model Nissan X Trail which I loved! The new model X Trail is too heavy for a B licence set up though. :(

How about a skoda octavia 4x4 and down plate the trailer
Skoda Yeti
Nissan Xtrail

I think there are more vehicles listed in the HHO TOWING CLINIC thread - link below in signature
