assuming the feed barn can get it in for me, which is the best brand of cardboard bedding? Also Ive managed paper before but whats the best way to manage cardboard- Two horses in on rubber matting? Thank you
Ecobed imho, i've used it for years (about 10, can't remember exactly!)
i do a 1/2 bed at back of stable, about 8" deep, but i have huge stables. i skip out at 10pm (would with any bedding anyway) and as long as i do that, every stable takes me about 4 mins to do in the morning. i pick out poos, then scrape out the wet with poo-picker rake and bucket, sprinkle essential oils 'disinfectant' (homemade) and either leave it to dry if horses are out, or cover over immediately if horses are in.
i take out 1 wheelbarrowfull for 3 horses at 10pm, and 2 barrows for 3 horses at 8am.
hope that helps!
Tried this briefly last year- makes a lovely dry dust free bed- v absorbent, and the bed stays in place nicely, (we take the wet out every day)- the downside was that I tried shredded Cardboard and I like deep beds/ big enogh banks even though they are on matting with 3 on it I got through 50 bales in just over a month!! not good! but I was paying only £4 a bale at the time- however in the past I've used squarer cut cardboard v similar to Ecobed and it was much much better to use. I do know of a supplier that will deliver cardboard bedding depending on where you are located.
thats fab- i like to have half beds so would be skipping out as regularly as poss. I have the carbolic powder or similar so when they are out I like to use that. Id rather use a by product of something -straw, paper- than an actual raw material like shavings etc and if labour time is minimal then thats a bonus.
Im in the SE, SWlondon area K27. Roughly how many bales am I looking to start off a bed?

I'd love to know what your recipie for essential oils 'disinfectant' is!
I have heard egg boxes are quite good!!! They are cheap, always a good thing, spongy and very absorbent so why not google it and find a supplier to have a chat. (I don't work for them btw)
Ive just been on their webby for the shredded egg cartons it looks fab! Again another good concept of recycling ! Im sure egg boxes are recycled anyway?
Now just need to see if new YO will let me bring my own?
thank you

umm, trying to remember.... it is about 5-10 drops of red thyme, tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon, (because these are all disinfectant, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, good for respiratory etc) and usually a bit of mandarin (as that is cheering and i like happy horses!) in a 2 litre coke bottle full of water, shaken up and sprinkled around, poured on the wet bits.
i then refill with water once or twice, no oils, and use that, as they stick to the bottle a bit so linger a while!
i get the oils online, far cheaper than high street.
