Hi all

I'm considering investing in some clippers for my very sensitive and ticklish horse. I clipped him last winter with my friend's Lister Stars, but he found them way too rattly and got very twitchy about it.

It's just a bit of a mine field out there for what to buy - and how much you need to spend. I don't want to skimp but I also don't want to spend more than I need to - there seem to be clippers advertised as fitting the bill from £100-300+ so I want to make sure I make the right choice.

He's my only horse so they would only need to do 3/4 full clips a year on a 16.1hh sports horse. Noise isn't an issue but they just need to be as smooth as possible as he's very ticklish.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated!

I like the rechargeable harmony ones, they're very quiet, and you don't have the hassle of cables to trip over.

Hi,
Look at the Harmony Plus this has the battery built in .
For a bit more power look at the libretto clippers from lister more money as the battery pack is the same one used on the liberty. This does mean you can buy a liberty clipper ( clipper only ) at a later date and use the same battery pack.

If you want a full size clipper mains powered look at the heiniger progress this is the quietest of the full size machines on the market .

Hope this helps
Nick

I have had my set of Wolseley clippers for years & they are still working well. They are not the quietest clippers but I've found that clippers that make a definite noise are easier to use on horses than quieter ones when the horse seems to try & listen intensely to them & worry. In the end it's a case of desensitising them to clippers, whatever the make. The more you clip them the easier they handle it & the less time it takes on each occasion. :)

I have used Wolseley clippers for my horse as well. They are really good in terms of giving results. I do agree with Toby_Zaphod that they are not the quietest clippers but then ya if you use them frequently your horse will surely get used to it.

Thanks fir the comments, the noise isn't a problem, he isn't nervous he is just very ticklish and has got worse rather than better with the Lister Stars. So noisy is fine but rattly is a definite no no.

Those who have recommended the Harmony Plus, are they heavy duty enough to cope with a full clip without struggling?

I also have Wolsley clippers, again would agree that they arent too quiet but they dont seem to vibrate on the horse too badly, I can clip the head of my pony with them and he is very sensitive around his head
