I only clip my horse and he is done a max of x 3 so it has taken my 2 years to think that my detoriating clipping might not be me....2 other friends have the same clippers and both are also "seasoned".. I have my blades sharpened annually as well. We have all ended up with horrendous tram lines, despite horses being clean and not overly hairy. Friend borrows another set and the result was outstanding! Clippers are very old so can't buy them now, but best clippers to purchase? My current ones (and the ones my friends have are a good name so weren't cheap!)

Can't be much help with what to buy but can offer some advice.

If you want them cheap (like under £200 really), don't go for cheap new ones go of good quality second hand clippers you will get far more life out of them than a badly made new pair.

I love my Livery,an C30 clippers they weren't cheap £250 I think could have been more but they are lovely to use and easy to handle I only clip my boy but now he has Cushings I probably clip him 4/5 times a year.

I have Lister Laser's which are probably too heavy duty for what you want.

However have you thought about replacing the tension spring and screw on the clippers you have, quite often a cause for poor clipping and not very expensive to try before shelling out on new ones :)

Must admit I agree with above, I would check the tensioning and try a new set of blades. My clippers must be 20 years old and I just clipped my girl again yesterday and they made a good job. They are listers and I think the model is stablemate but don't think the make them anymore.

I will try that....the clippers are Listers so not cheap! Thank you!

Hi, if you are getting tram lines, please check the following. Turn machine upside down and look into the head. You should see a metal block, that has a peg sticking out from it at 90 degrees. On the peg,is a small metal roller held in place with a tiny circlip. Check it is in place and that the roller is not "sloppy" on the pin. Next, get your large bottom blade and drop one of the holes in it,over the plastic pegs that it locates onto. Check each peg. The pegs should be a nice fit,if the pegs are worn you will get rattles and lines. Last thing, check your small blade. (Cutter) There are two types. One has a black piece of moulded plastic all the way across it, The other has a centre mounted u shap steel piece and two individual plastic blocks. Check the blocks for wear, these slide from left to right in the head,in a groove. If you have the black plastic piece, check the screws that hold it to the blade, or if no screws, check it is not loose. then check the u shape section and ensure it is not worn. Remember the steel roller rotates inside this and moves the blades. If worn, you will get lines. Lastly check your tension set. Easy to do, remove from machine and then wind the nut down the thread. Often the thread gets damaged half way and it becomes tight. Then you will not be able to correctly tension it. The nut should wind down till the bottom of the thread.

Feel free to PM Me if stuck

You are WONDERFUL. Have copied this into an email to myself and will try this tomorrow....

Your welcome, I did also wonder about your blades, do you and your friends get them sharpened at the same place? Did you all have same problem? Just curious, also see if you can find a name/model on the clipper, may help narrow it down a bit.

I have heiniger Handy clippers but thinking about buying the cordless ones instead as i will only be using them for freezemarks now as I don't like clipping and new mare needs two people as never been clipped before where as old mare I could do solo. They are a good make so I recommend them
