I used to love researching feed but I just dont have the time these days so can anyone recommend a good feed for my 22 year old Luso x TB please? He's a naturally slim type, but he's come out of winter a bit too lean for my liking and I dont have much land for him to gain much from the grass (he's out 24/7). He also has a bit of a dim coat so something which added a bit of a shine would be nice (he's been tested for cushings last year which was negative as I thought his coat suggested it). Cant afford to feed crazy expensive feeds though at the moment (self employed furlough). He's currently on Healthy Tummy chaff and Pink Mash, along with a local vit & min supplement. His teeth are perfectly ok so he can cope with a mix etc. but I do always add a mash of some kind as he has had choke in the past. I know some people say bog standard grass nuts??

Recommendations please?

Veteran and Vitality does my oldie so well as does a handful of Copra. They don't need to be old to benefit from fees aimed at older horses.

The equine hospital near me used Baileys number 17 and my horse came out of there looking amazing, possibly too amazing ! I had never heard of it and not bought it, but might be worth looking at. The hospital said it is a feed that sick horses like and will often eat.

How much are you giving him currently?

The pink mash is not a conditioning feed. This could be easily swapped for soaked grass nuts. Then topped up with an oil pellet, I’ve used omega rice plenty in the past.

It boils down to calories in. You can calculated this yourself from the weight you feed.

Add micronised linseed as it is good for his coat, hooves and will gain weight. Pink mash is short on vitamins so a good vitamin supplement might help too
