Hi all, i posted on here after my ID was diagnosed with Photosensitivity and the uv boots that were mentioned have helped his legs a treat along with bringing him in during the day out of sunlight and turnong out at night!

I was just wondering what creams people use to help remove the scabs or soothe the skin???

Also in Veterinary.

My girl had a photosensitivity reaction, when we had so much snow on the ground. I can remember the name, possibly flamizole?? I can check later, as I still have some. It came from the vets. It worked wonders, I'd put it on, clingfilmed her legs for 12 hrs (so it could soak into her pores and soften the scabs) then shampoo off (again from the vets ?? its name) and repeat until the thickened scabs were clear redened skin, then I just had to cover from the sun.

Out of intrest what boots / wraps did you go for, as I had a nightmare getting anything to stay on my girls legs, esp when I needed hocks and knees covered too

Hi Scallywags!

I bought the equilibrium boots but have had them a week and they have ripped already as they have no give and they are for his hind legs! Glad i got them cheap!!!

So today i invested in the Cashel Crusader uv boots as they have elasticated velcro and cater for a bigger size! Fingers crossed they will last a bit longer. as they cost alot more than the others. Would appreciate the name of the cream too if you can !!

Thanks!

I used to use Tescos' Aloe Vera hand lotion to both remove the scabs and soothe the skin. Worked a treat for my old girl, she used to love her daily facial.

3 of our horses have photosensitivity and the vet told us to hibiscrub their scabs with warm water to soften the scabs so u can pick them off. then we put flamazine, sunblock and uv protection boots on

Hello

I got the equilibrium sun chaps, they have split on this hind legs but are still functioning, touch wood I have had no problems as of yet, he had it really badly lasy year :(

My vet has also given me some cream to trial, KOB hoof paste, it is for digital dermastitis in cattle and is not licensed in horses at the moment. You put it on as soon as a scab appears, I put some on a tiny scab and it disappeared more or less straight away! Wear gloves though as it burns! I know :(

Sudocream & if looking like they may be getting infected then mix in some sulphur powder. My girl is sensitive to broad leaf legumes. Have you found the cause of you horses sensitivity? If you can eliminate the cause (relatively easy for me, she now gets a non-grain based feed balancer & grass nuts, no ready mixed feeds (make sure she stays well clear of sugar beet & alfa-a), she doesn't get the scabs anymore.

When my mare had this I used quite a few creams, also the vet gave me steroid cream - non of which worked. I bought some Cream called Herbavet and it worked wonders.
