Best cross-country boots

Please could I have your recommendations - my mare and I are not exactly high level competitors but we're going to be doing a few low-level competitions and horse camp, and I'd like to make sure her legs are well protected. I was thinking perhaps Premier Equine - what is the consensus on these? Also, if you could give some idea of sizing that would be great - she's a 14.2 warmblood so between a pony and horse size, but with delicate little unfeathery legs so I am always put off 'cob' sizing even though I assume that just means medium most of the time.

I have front premier equine boots for my 15.1/2 mare who has regular width legs but fairly short cannon bones and the small fit her well. i love my boots and get complements everywhere and there have been no injuries yet :)
 
PEs slipped and rubbed my mare quite badly. We've been using the Le Mieux Stealth boots since and had no problems :). She wears a 'home' pair for hacking (so very often) and they clean up like new after a spin in the washing machine.
 
I have the Le Mieux stealth boots too. I am a Le Mieux addict. I used them for the first time at the Halton sponsored ride this year in very muddy conditions and they were excellent and unlike some makes I've tried didn't rub my boy's legs :)
 
I wanted to do the Halton sponsored ride but it sold out in a week, before I got round to booking my place! Definitely a good test for xc boots!

Yeah, it's incredibly popular. It definitely has the best jumps. Conditions were grim this year. Hope you get in for next year. Maybe an H&H Forum meet up could be arranged there :)

Back on the subject of XC Boots, a lot of people I know use those Dalmar ones and seem very happy with them.

I like clarendon as they are tough - double secure with hooks and velcro. Extra protection if a strange horse kicks out while in collection ring etc
 
ecogold XC boots are a firm favourite on twittereventing fb page although never had them myself and never even had heard of them until fairly recently although am sorely tempted when next go XC boot shopping

Whereas I have used PE front ones & N.e.w ones without any issue

Thought the dalmars had some issue with the tendon piece shattering and causing horrific injuries awhile back but presume that issue been sorted now

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. I might mention it to my friends just so they are aware.

Same experience for me too, i also have the LM Stealth which are brilliant
 
Yes PE Slipped and rubbed on us too. Unless they are 100% on the width they tend to turn around. Also grit and muck gets through the vents and rubs. I'm fitting a 14.2 ISH with slender legs just like you OP. The n.e.w boots were great last season - but I am slightly concerned that the fit on the hinds is fractionally too high for him. They have to be fitted absolutely correctly with no space for error. Probably no bad thing though! I love the look of the le mieux ones - but can't justify new boots just yet....
 
I have N.E.W xc ones and PE xc ones, I much prefer the N.E.W ones. I much prefer the fit and protection of the N.E.W ones, the PE ones have rubbed before due to grit sometimes getting under them. My N.E.W ones also still look in good shape considering how long I've had them. They wash really well.

Horse Health/Le Mieux are releasing a new and improved version of the stealth XC (MKIII) in May :). The MKIIs should come down in price then, and you'll probably find people selling theirs second hand to get a pair of the new ones.

ooh, Glad the II's are likely to come down, i want the silver pair! i wonder if they'll be on offer at Badminton?
 
Another question - is it worth getting fronts and backs or just fronts? Bearing in mind we won't be doing a bigger course than 80cms. She's generally very good at picking her feet up, she's a careful jumper. I don't want to risk injury but generally I have a 'less is more' approach to tack!
 
I've use Premier Equine XC boots and find there is a trick to stop them slipping. When you put them on do them up as tight as possible. 10 minutes later tighten them up. The boots seem to soften with the horse's body heat enabling them to be done up tighter which prevents them slipping.
