Hi All,

I have recently bought a lovely rising 4 year old KWPN mare who has only recently been imported from Holland. She is currently finishing her isolation stint at our livery yard with ad lib (quite dry) haylage, approx eating around 8kg a day at the moment. Bucket feed she gets 1/2 scoop Happy Hoof molasses free and 1/4 scoop fibre cubes twice a day for now. She could do with a little more condition though I know that she is mostly lacking topline which will come once she is backed and starting to do some work.

I am looking into what would be a suitable diet for her, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I really wouldn't change anything at the moment. Last thing you want is an unintended whoopsie with a young sporthorse who has just arrived.

Give it 6 months of steady work and grass and if at the end of that period you still think you need a feed change then re-evaluate.

A move from Holland to the UK must be very stressful for her so best not to overload her with any cereals. I might add some oil, linseed etc to give her a boost but otherwise give her as much hay/Haylage as she will eat.

Thanks, we tried to add a sprinkle of linseed (as my other horse gets it so we have some) but she wouldn't eat the feed at all so for now we are sticking with the small chaff/pony nuts combo and if she is not putting much condition on in a couple of months we may try the linseed again.
We are hoping once she is out of isolation and in with her herd (fingers crossed) then she may settle into a regular routine :-)
