Hi there :D

I'd like to get Oak insured now he's going to start going out on shoots, who are a good company to go with? (cheaper the better - obviously!)

Thanks :D

My dog is insured with Direct Line. They were the best value for money for the cover I wanted. I haven't made a claim though.

Having been through most of the insurance companies really the best one is petplan lifetime cover, you do get what you pay for and they at least for the vast majority pay out, unlike some companies that have a shocking reputation leaving the owners with a bill.

I have found though that if vets know you have your pet insured they do a lot of unnecessary procedures some that can be very invasive and short term life preserving that is not always in the best interest of the dog/pet or their client. So make your mind up early on what you are prepared and not prepared to put your pet through for your benefit.

Altough they are not the cheapest, Petplan have always been excellent for me. Over twelve years I had about £14k of payouts from them some of that on a 'lifetime' illness claim (so a standard cheap policy would have stopped paying after 12 months).
Also you have to be careful, if he is a working dog which im sure they will see him as, they may not pay on 'work related' claims. Our sheep dog isn't insured for injury caused through farm work.
Once I phoned up another insurance company for a quote and was told by the person I spoke to not to bother changing insurers as I wouldn't get as good a service, bizzare I know :-/
