Our new rescue dog is coming home tomorrow and I want to get him insured (mainly for vets fees!). I've always used Petplan in the past and never had any problems - they have always paid out quickly and never quibbled anything - but their premiums are fairly high. Which companies do you use and would recommend, or otherwise not recommend! Thanks!

petplan - their premiums are higher because they have a lifelong policy, they promise not to put prices up when you put in a claim on the life long policy and they do not do life long policies for horses so you cannot compare their horse/household pets cover. the prices will go up with inflation though.

at work we have a dog that has medication each month that costs more than the monthly instalments and petplan have honoured the above promise for over 2 yrs, they also allowed a client who adopted their neighbours dog when the neighbour died to continue the policy even thought the dog was elderly and has had many claims in the past.

petplan are expensive for a reason, they do pay out without issue IF you are within the terms and conditions of your policy.

Petplan every time. Their premiums are a little higher to start off with but unlike other companies they don't ramp them up massively after a claim. I spend a lot of time dealing with pet insurance claims at work and they are easily the most consistent, prompt and helpful company with the most generous levels of cover.

Avoid E&L and Animal Friends (I've personally had no problems with the latter paying out, as some have, but they doubled the premium after a claim and I'm now stuck with it as to avoid exclusions. They have been pretty shoddy with some of our clients). Also don't bother with 12 month policies, go for lifetime only.

Thanks. I think we're going to stick with Petplan again then on one of their lifetime policies. For the extra few pounds per month I think it's worth it for the peace of mind (and OH has just said that he'll pay for it too ;) )
