I'm on the hunt for what seems like the holy grail...

Need a decent sized door mat. One that can cope with big muddy wet dogs (and wellies! though that's the human bit, not the dog bit).

Size wise it needs to be 70cm by 100cm so it fills the wee hallway, thereby taking all the wet and muck from the hounds (and the wellies...).

My holy grail too. However, I also needed a mat that doesn't collect and trap dog hair. I hate intensive hoovering and it also needed to be inexpensive for the times when the cats decided to use it as a litter tray because it's too cold and wet outside.
Until the perfect mat appears, my solution is to use heavy duty cardboard from large boxes cut to to lengths of 3'. Its not pretty, but it's very effective and doesn't mind wet wellies and paws.

Your local carpet shop for an offcut with a bit of rug grip underneath.

Give it a good wash every now and again and if all else fails, deposit it at the tip for recycling (but I'm cheap?)

This is the sort of thing I use. Comes in lots of different sizes. They are the mats you get in office hallways and shops.

I recently discovered microfiber mats that are usually used for bathrooms. They make "dog" versions which are essentially large versions with non slip backing. Are they attractive? No, not really, but they are functional. They can hold a lot of water and dirt. You can just shake it off and toss it in the wash. Good for winter/wet season. A friend with multiple dogs swears by them. You can get them in really large sizes too, if you poke around a bit.

Nice indeed, but a bit beyond my current budget. Though if nothing else then will bite the bullet!

Are you anywhere near a dog show venue? You need the dog show mat man! There's always one selling rubber-backed mats and runners in all shapes and sizes. Splendid Pets have some of the ex-commercial dirt trapper mats.

Ah yes, those are good. Too big on that link but will keep looking. No dog venues around here that I know of.

Need a decent sized door mat.
Size wise it needs to be 70cm by 100cm .

That'd be ME then.....although think I am bigger than 70cm x 100cm, I come tattooed with "please deposit all your sh*t/mud on me" across my forehead...

No actual practical recommendations though sorry!

We have a double pronged approach, the large rubber backed short pile mats from dunelm, with an old microfiber bath mat for first stand, even 10 seconds stood on the microfibre is great, but I have been thinking about looking for a bigger one.
OH commented last night "why does the blurdi dog have all the bath mats" ?

These mats are good from B&M - we've got builders in so I bought a few to try and keep on top of the mess! You can cut them to size and they shake out and wash well. They do a good job at soaking up any moisture. Unfortunately they are 150x57cm so not quite the right size, but they're excellent value so maybe get a couple and cut them to fit precisely?

We've had Marvel Mats from Dunelm for an age, they're brilliant except over time the rubber backings really don't stand up to repeated washings and start to disintegrate. I've just spent double on a Turtle Mat which is one of the original cotton absorber mats, it certainly catches a lot more stuff, we'll just pray it washes up better!
