So my nutty mare is already on magnitude and superflex at the moment. However shes still sometimes "nutty".
She can be as calm as a daisy and then suddenly throw the toys out and major tantrum about nothing.
Some days shes an angel other days its "the energiser bunny needing to be sectioned" look.

Im getting really down about it, weve been working really hard to go to a dressage test on friday, but the last two days shes thrown all the toys out, and reared up, thrown head about, gob open, and refusing to canter on the correct leg on the left rein.

I despair, shes had all checks and shes fine and some days she goes so nicely!! But today its just like a different animal and i cant take her to a dressage test if she throws her toys out as she can be quite dangerous!

Any other suggestions for calmers, or for mares? I know most calmers are mainly based on magnesium, hense why she is on magnitude but its not enough, short of elephant tranquiliser im at a loss :(

Thanks :)

by the way, shes a 14.1hh connemara mare

Try feeding this mix twice daily while the grass is growing fast.

1 Level Tablespoon each
Epsom Salts (Magnesium) - calms muscles
Baking Soda Reduces acid levels in the gut
Yeast binds any mico-toxins that can affect the central nervous system
Dried Thyme a natural blood cleanser

Once the grass has settled down then feed once daily preferably about 1.5 - 2 hours before work. The timing of feeding a magnesium supplement is imortant as it is metabolised fast.

This is an old New Zealand stockmans recipe which has been far more effective than any of the modern commercial preparations.

Could it be hormonal? Have you checked out her ovaries? Is she worse when she's in season?

I've tried magnitude and it was useless for that particular horse - the calmers I've had the most consistent success with are Nupafeed and HorseFirst RelaxMe

She gets ridden 5 days a week for a hour, and only gets a handful of speedibeet and a handful of dried ready grass, we dont feed any sugary or high energy foods. She gets turnout 9 hours a day at the moment and then hay in her box, shes not massively fed, but shes just about right in body weight!

Have you tried feeding less and working more? I've found not enough work and some grass makes a spooky horse
I have the same trouble with a highly strung ex racer TB gelding. I tried many many different things and Instant Magic works but it worked even better once I had changed his diet. I feed him Allen and Page Ride and relax and Allen and Page Calm and Condition in the summer and only after he has been ridden - no hay in the summer either and he lives out. I swap the Calm and Condition for sugar beet in the winter but only because sugar beet is a slow release energy feed and it helps him hold condition in the winter (along with proper rugging) and he is fed that twice a day with hay.

Magnesium Sufate is good too, a friend of mine swears by it and she puts a tea spoon a day in her feeds, however, it can act as a laxative so you have to work out the right amount for your horse.

Equistro Beta Mag 12. cannot recommend it highly enough after having tried four other types i now have a perfectly behaved horse!

vetuk.co.uk is the cheapest supplier

Although the horses I've had have been absolutely fine with speedibeet and dried grass, I would stop feeding them for a week (and I wouldn't feed any supplements) to see if this makes any difference. I have had horses which couldn't have sugar or alfalfa or any cereals. It could even be that your calmer is cereal (or something else) based which is upsetting her.
You have all my sympathy - I've got lots of T-shirts! I'm sure you will get it sorted eventually. It might be worth having your checks done again, or even getting a 2nd opinion.

Super Kalm Plus, a syringe supplement from Equine America, strongest thing out there that I've found.
Costs 320 for a tube and a tube is one dose though. But might be worth it if you really want to do the test.
Not surei f it would work if it's a hormonal problem though.

Cool, Calm and Collected by Equifeast. Amazing wonder product!

Also, stop the speedibeet! It sends my horse loopy... (think spring grass loooy 24/7-365!)

I feel your pain!! My gelding is acting exactly as your mare is, calm and relaxed one minute then dangerous phsyco the next! I also have had all the checks done and have tried numerous calmers with very little or no effect, in fact im starting to wonder if they make him worse!!

On the upside, i have found that Instant Magic takes the edge off but not suitable for day to day use..sorry im not much help just wanted you to know youre not alone!!

Will be watching this post! Good luck, and please let me know if you find a cure!!:)

Thanks guys, i have just been and bought magic in the liquid form, it looked the most suitable in the shop so im going to be "loading" her for the next few days and ill keep you posted as to whether i see any effects :)

Sods law, its windy and cold today and she was an angel....hah!!

Bit of an update!

We decided to put her in for the test, she was an appolute star on tuesday and wednesday so thought **** it, we will go for it. Yesterday, we were the devil reincarnate and i could have died, so didnt sleep a wink last night!!

Just came home, and she was a star!!!
Her very first Elementary test, and third ever dressage test and she got 56%!

I know its not the biggest score ever, but she is very inexperienced, and still has a lot of work to do, since she basically galloped the last bit of the test!! Im so very proud :D

Ps ill keep you posted on the magic!!

Congratulations, on being brave enough to go and on doing so well.
Seriously think about stopping the feed though, long term that's much better (and more effective) than feeding supplements.
