Lady up the road from me has just bought an 7 month old sports horse foal. I havent seen it but she has asked me what would be the best feed for it as it is apparently a bit poor. I know nothing about foals and would be grateful for any advice to pass on.

My little chap has thrived on D&H Foal Mix with a bit of chaff along with adlib haylage at night and grass in the day. He has just changed over to D&H Mare and Youngstock Mix now he is nearly a year. He was on the foal mix straight after weaning at 5 months. He looks perfect weight and has a glossy coat, just a bit odd looking when he has his growth spurts!

I bought our Han x colt at 7m he was poor. Went onto Spillers Youngstock with some garlic, hifi, and some great haylage. With the spring grass coming through he should pick up x

My 6 month old foal came to me in poor condition, underweight and dull coat, the Feed I put him on was bailey stud mix and baileys balancer its gave him the boost he needed with the weight gain and multivitamins he was missing. Its costly but did the job and now he is thriving.
Now he is a year old i have put him on spiller youngstock mix and is doing wonders i would suggest she put her young one on either one of these feeds.

If you need more advice i would suggest phoning up bailey or spillers neutralist advice line they can give you all the help you need.
Hope this helps.
xx:)

Winergy equilibrium growth. Complete feed so no messing around. Feed it to my babies, would recommend

I would second something like this. Sudden weaning at 5/6 months, moving from milk to a course mix is asking for stomach ulcers. Many foals lose weight at this time due to both stress and the sudden change in diet, which they cant necessarily digest properly. Many people dont realise that foals can get stomach ulcers and feeding cereal based feeds are the worst thing you can do for this. You get better bone growth and a more healthy gut by feeding fibre based feeds compared to starch based feeds.

Scotsmare and teddyt are both right, the very worst thing for a foal is a cereal rich diet, not only from the ulcers aspect but also a sudden cereal induced growth spurt can easily impact on joints.

Stick with Winergy growth would be my advice
