What do you all recommend for feeding your horse? Main feeds and supplements?

I have a rather prone to being skinny type horse that is in heavy work and competing that needs to put on some serious condition before winter championships in April!

Any advise welcomed :)

How skinny is the horse? Do you have pictures? What is the current workload? What are you currently feeding? What is horses temprement like?

By far and the best is adlib decent fibre.
Thereafter the world is your oyster, so much choice these days. Sometimes it is better to keep it simple.

What are you feeding now?

personally what works for my mare-

Calm and condition 3kg per day
Linseed 2 mugs per day
ERS pellets 500gm per day

Adlib hay and turnout on good grass.

She also has MSM and Pro balance as supplements

Hes currently worked 6 days a week (mixture of schooling, hacking and lunging) he’s competed 3 times a month with 1-2 weekends off depending on the month length.

Hes currently on conditioning cubes (standard spillers ones) and Mollichaff Calmer as well as being on NAF Magic powder and garlic.

Here he is...

How much are you feeding? how about hay/haylage/grass?

A square sized scoop of each twice a day (supplements as instructed) he's grazed during the day. Large haylage net per night along with 2 slabs of dried hay lose in his stable...
(I think he's eating a LOT for a 14.3hh but doesn't seem to be showing benefits of it!)

What volume are you feeding?
How much hay/haylage?

He doesn't look skinny to me?

Sorry forgot to add. Photo doesn't show it well but he drops in just at his flank and over winter this gets worse so I need to keep it at bay this year he's only just got a littleeee chubbier!

How much in actual weight of feed though?

Second the fact he doesn't actually look skinny, don't ever own a tb! Esp the anorexic type that I have!

I have a shire cross who will drop weight just thinking about it he eats like an elephant or he ends up looking like a welfare case!

Agree with Ihatework ad lib hay or haylege and add a mug of linseed meal to each feed. could also try an oil based alfalfa as his chaff rather than Mollichaff. I didn't think he looked particularly skinny but does he drop weight when you travel him, this is very common and my little connemara x TB does this, I just increase his hay at night when he comes home. He usually picks up in a day or so. I use Top Spec conditioning cubes and find them very good. Good luck you should find some useful information on here.

I would swap mollichaff for either dried grass or unmolassed alfalfa, far more benefit in those, without the added sugar. Good quality conditioning cubes are ok, I'd add in linseed as a top up

Having seen the results in a friends horse I have to say D+H build and glow is a great addition to feed.

Also I've had great results with linseed, calm and condition and spillers conditioning fibre.
