Can anyone recommend a good feed for our 17 year old ISH please. She’s lost abit due to rubbish grass lately.

Shes currently on pink mash & a daily balancer.

Thank you!

Soothe and gain is a higher calorie mash, or if you wanted something to add to her existing feed, micronised linseed is a good high calorie/low sugar feed. Also vegetable oil is a cheap addition.
Does she have ad-lib forage? It might be worth supplementing the grazing with hay/lage now the goodness has gone out of the grass.

She comes in every day for a few hours for hay and a feed, but I think because her exercise is increasing she’s struggling to hold weight. She’s constantly cold too so that’s not helping 😒

Can you pop a heavier rug on her to keep her warm? If you're allowed to put hay out in the field that might help as well. You may also need to give her more than one feed a day if she needs a large quantity of hard feed.

Unfortunately not allowed to put hay out as she’s in a herd and another mare is food aggressive.
Yes going to buy a 150g rug asap,
We only got her in May and our other girl is a cob so never had this issue before 😂

Pink mash do a condition version if you’re happy with it otherwise.
Or could you add another feed after riding? A linseed/grass nuts mix possibly?

I would get a good rug wardrobe if she’s feeling the cold.

She has 200g but I’m going to order her a 150g

Thank you! Will start giving her a feed after her lessons, I will look at new food xx

make sure she's getting plenty of fibre, adlib hay, if you can afford to/get hold of enough. and you wont find anything higher in fat than mirconised linseed, so you could just add that to what she's already having.

I had my 20yr old ISH on Equerry conditioner, Barley, Oats, Chaff and Precision Microbes when he lost weight last winter.
He looks amazing now. But have been feeding him all summer to keep it on going back into winter.

I also found cushcare was great for my oldie. But if she’s losing weight with the increased work load I might be inclined to slow down for a few weeks until she’s put some back on.

I find if they are looking a bit poor around this time of year when their coats change it can be a pita to get them to put it back on over winter.

are you planning to winter her out? you are going to really struggle if you cannot hay the field.

i would bring in for several hours of hay (at least 4 hours) and also provide a mash feed with added linseed before and after work.

but you will struggle if relying mostly on grass.

mine are in 200g overnight, can you either add a layer or change rug for overnight?

You don't mention how many feeds she is having daily, but can you add another feed for her?

As had been suggested above, try adding linseed, or oil to start with.

Also, increase her forage - how much hay/haylage is she getting a day?

No she will be coming in over night in the winter x

Spillers senior mash put weight back on mine or simple systems haycare if you just want the bulk without the calories. I had to give the two older ones three feeds during the summer as the grass was rubbish and one had asthma. I gave an extra feed of the haycare. (Both are 27)

Personally I am a firm believer of good old fashion fibre without all these starchy mixes like pasture mix etc.

My new ID is underweight when he came last week, and he is already putting weight on, not so Ribby. Timothy chop
Equivite and haycare snack in the evening 10pm hay and grazing and handful of grass nuts.
