Hi we have around 300 metres of fencing to install on our new field that will hopefully be home to out two Shetland ponies.
Would stock fencing with a strand of electric be safe?
I don’t trust just having an electric fence and want a physical barrier as well but equally don’t want to put the ponies at any risk. I know they do horse stocks fencing but over 300 meters would cost a fortune.

I would not trust Shetlands with just electric - but I wouldn't choose stock fencing for shetlands, as their feet fit through the gaps. I have it, as I wasn't given the choice, and it worries me when I see them rolling near it. I'd be inclined to wait, save, and have post and rail, or proper horse fencing, if I were you

I had stock fencing round my old field with a rail above, I would put an electric fence in front of it though because my Shetland loved to use it to itch on and fat furry bottoms tend to damage the fence, she also used it for a full body scratch and kind of aimed at it with a shoulder and leaned into it to itch along her sides. I never had a problem with feet getting stuck though, she was far to clever for that.

Are these the 2 weanlings? I would be very careful about using electric fencing with very young ones and definitely not std stock fencing
Yes, the likes of tornado fencing is pricey, as is post and rail but could well save you a lot of escaping or damage to tiny ponies in the long term.

They are 3 years old and currently in a field with chicken mesh/wire and electric fence.
I would love post and rail but over 300 metres would cost thousands! As would using horse specific wire.
