I need to sort my fields out, I have 4 acres and 2 horses but because it is very well draining (a blessing just now) the grass doesnt grow very well in it.

It was fertilized last year by the owners/a contractor but then it didnt rain for weeks and weeks so we didnt get the thick growth that we had done previously. They only fetilise it every 2nd year.

I am debating whether to either

spread all the well rotted muck back on to the field
or
fertilise with Suregrow/20:10:10/paddock royal
or
fertilise with a calcified seaweed....

what do you guys think?

I would stick with the 20:10:10 mix
Free draining soil doesn't retain nutrients for long, especially in heavy rain.
I have light sandy soil and have been advised to fertilise with 20:10:10 every year.

hi, i had this issue last year, i brought some paddock royale, and when i picked it up from the local suppliers they said the company also do a soil analysis, it worked out at about £40 but given the fertiliser isnt cheap i thought it a cost effective way to make sure the ground got what it needed. the company were excellent and very helpfull. they advised on exactly how much to put on (actually slightly less than it recommended on the bag) as it already had some good fertility, they also advised on which minerals to put on, equally as crutial as the fertiliser. the minerals only cost a little more, but slightly less than the fertiliser would have done at the full rate. the grass that came through was fantastic, and the mineral pellets dont need to be done again for approx 5 years.

well worth the money and time to carry out, it was simple to do and you just post the soil off, they then post you results and you can ring to dicuss - best of luck

Calcified seeweed wont act as a fertiliser as such, it will increase the Ph of the soil so that the nutrients are more readily avaliable. The best thing to do would be to get the PH of your soil analysed and go from there.
