My mare's just gone out 24/7 with her lami prone friend and is being strip grazed, currently not getting any feeds but would like her to have access to salt if she feels she needs it.

Can anyone reccommend a good field salt block? We have two trees which we can tie them round but they'd have to be quite large ropes. What's the best way to provide a salt block? On the floor?

Is there such a thing as magnesium salt blocks? Are they good?

Also salt mustn't be too yummy or else ponies will just stand and gnaw away at it!

Thank you :)

you could buy the himalayn type on a rope about £4 to 6. I have that in a field shelter and it could be tied to a tree. The other thing I do is buy a £2 mineral block (like a brick) put it on the ground and as long as clumsy clot doesnt trample it lasts about 3 weeks..even in rain/snow etc

He is good doer so no molasses types for me(which he eats in one day) ie horselyxx £17+

But the old fashioned block is good and cheap

Rockies (no molasses so suitable for lami!) do a high mag one for horses

However my lami girl didnt seem to like it so i use a yellow standard Rockies agricultural one (much cheaper ,safe for horses too)

Have noticed tho that Rockies also do an 'agricultural' high magnesium one too which is suitable for horses and that means bigger and cheaper and more suitable for a field rather than stable. Its the Rockies blue one to look for, but you might need to get from an agric supplier rather than tack shop who will make a better mark up on the small horse specific magcalm block.

The only Rockies you cant feed to all types of stock are the copper enhanced ones for cattle (red rockies and SC cattle blocks) which cant be fed to sheep as they cant tolerate the copper - but even those still arent harmful to horses, only sheep.

The Himalayan ones are great:D

My mare is laminitic and she has them all summer in her field - goes through one a month roughly - she obviously needs it as my gelding also has a small one that lasts him all summer - if she doesn't nick it!:rolleyes: you can just leave them on the floor - they don't dissolve easily so no worries about the rain:D
