I had a 14.2hh cob x until about 3 years ago and she's was always in horseware amigo which seemed to fit her really well as she had big shoulders and didn't rub or the odd Weatherbeeta rug.

I now have a bigger lad who is Irish and 16hh.

What rugs do you all recommend for the bigger boned horse? I've got him on loan currently and half of his rugs are far too small as they use rugs on him that they had on their small TB! He's a good 6ft 6 and he mainly only has 6ft 3!

I've a huge, wide 16.3hh carriage horse and I find that HKM rugs fit his mass and shoulders well.

I found that Gallop rugs fitted my 16hh massive shouldered, big barrelled, short-backed Draft horse as well as anything and better than some more expensive brands. She wore 6' 9", often with a neck, got no rubs from them and they covered her frame. She looked as if she was wearing a miniskirt in some brands!

Big Horse shop.

The have a FB page you can see customers showing how well they fit.

Only ones that fit my chunky boys.

Though I do have to go down a size from normal rugs.

I second the big horse shop. They are good quality rugs, the rugs I bought my mare from them 5 years ago still going strong. I would say they are true to size.... I don't size down. I have just bought a new lightweight rain sheet from them and they are now doing a new broader fit. I would say the popular sizes sell out quick hence me pre-ordering mine now so I have a spare ?

Ooh i will have a look at this thank you!

He's not a heavy horse but Irish draught build so don't want his shoulders being rubbed to death or them looking like a mini skirt!

I like ruggles rugs, I have a 59g that is really good quality. I have a non big boned WB but they do heavy horse versions of rugs, worth a look perhaps

My horse is built like a tank and takes 7’3” to 7’6” rugs. I have rugs from the Big Horse Shop (their rugs are massive) and agree they are great. Also have Swiss Equestrian and a Rambo Optima with removable liners. All have a long drop and fit my horse’s very broad shoulders. He’s never had shoulder rub with any other them. They are all now in their 7th/8th season and show no signs of needing replacing anytime soon.

Swish rugs seem very popular!
