Looking for a new fly rug for my 16.1 horse after the old one had to be thrown out. Seems to be so many different options out there, not sure where to start.

Want a lightweight one to use every day in summer, don’t want him getting hot and sweaty underneath. Also needs to be durable enough to survive in a field with 2 other horses who like to try to take chunks out of each other!

Any recommendations? (Under £100 ideally). Thanks.

I've bought the Rambo Summer series which is pricy, but haven't used it yet, because it's got a waterproof back and detachable liner and I bought it for sunshine and shower days.

I really rate the weatherbeeta Kool coat Airstream for around £40 + . It's a combo cotton sheet back with mesh sides. It allows the air to flow under the sheet while giving some protection against the sun's rays beating down on their backs. It's a tough little rug.

Can’t beat the Rambo protector. The only rug that my Connie hasn’t destroyed. It fits really well, is nice and light and cool and keeps the flies off.

I have a Shires Tempest which is the same fabric as a bug rug - fits really well everywhere apart from the neck - I've had to let it out so the velcro fastenings just touch - a real shame because its white light & cool - I've already ordered a mesh version so I'm hoping I don't have the same issue ?

Weatherbeeta comfitec has survived a summer with rug rippers and fits well.

I also use the amigo aussie all rounder that isnt a mesh but horse stays cooler under it

Learnt to my cost that skimping on fly rugs is a waste of money... my Rambo ones are going strong after years but bought two of the ponies cheap ones last year and they both were destroyed in 3 weeks... Rambo all the way for me

I bought the Rambo Vamoose this summer, not cheap but with rugs you get what you pay for in my opinion. Very happy with it now it autumn here I stuck it in my washing machine before packing it away and it came up like new.

I've got one from Shadow Horse, not sure what make they are. Expensive, but it's paid for itself as it's about 5 years old now

I hadn't heard of this company but had a look at their website and liked some of the design ideas. Thanks for posting about them. Is your rug generously sized and roomy around the neck ?

Just be careful if you have cats. The chemical that Vamoose rugs are impregnated with is toxic to cats iirc. There was a thread on here about it; possibly starts with a P.

they come up quite small, so I would buy a size up from what you normally get. My mare has a wide chest and it fits her well. We have the version without a neck. The staff there are very helpful and will advise, and you can send it back for a replacement if it's unused and not marked.
