Hi, I'm new here so please be gentle! I have an arab with sweet itch - a flyrug is working well but he will not keep a mask on - he thinks he's clever hiding it in the field! Can anyone recommend something strong enough yet gentle because he is very very sensitive and most flysprays ive tried he makes it clear that it stings or it has no effect. The one that seemed to work last year was coopers fly plus and now no-one can get it. Ive tried so many products that he now has more lotions than my bathroom. Any tried and tested suggestions would be much appreciated!

Tri tec is closest to Coopers. Neem oil is quite effective but even though it is natural you can still get skin reaction so patch test first too.

I like tri tec 14, it lasts for a few days. I also use deosect but I find it a nuisance having to dilute it when you need it. It's more convenient having a bottle at the field you can use when you need it.

Wicked, thanks guys, I'm definitely going to try the Tritec as not used it before. I have been trying Skin So Soft with fairly good results (it seems to work really well around his boy bits and he doesn't try to kick me when it's applied) but it is not stopping him rubbing the fur off his face and I need to stop it before he damages his skin. Neem oil is also one I will look into as not familiar with it. You have saved me yet another afternoon staring at all the bottles in the local feedstore!

Hi i have an Arab who although not diagnosed with sweet itch, does rub his tail out slightly, and vet and I think its fly bite related. Only happens certain times of year, Use fly rug day and night, which I hate, but hate him itching more and a product called Switch. So far has really helped this year. Oh and bathing as well and aloe vera gel rubbed in dock area if appearing dry or hot.

Avon skin so soft and about 20% benzyl benzoate with small amounts of Butox Swish works brilliantly for mine. I also use listerine and TCP mixed with a water and sponge that all over his rugs. I put sudocreme on his sheath and anywhere that looks like it might be sore or doesnt have any hair/rug cover. You can literally see the mides head towards him then do a 180 turn away :)

Try attaching fly masks to your rugs. If my mare gets her mask off her face is a mess with puffed up eyes, so I sewed tabs and clips on to shires fly masks and fly combos.

Net Tex Stop Itch is excellent for around the face...very soothing and an excellent repellent. It's a cream not a spray

Having a sweetitch suffering shettie, who came to me with scabs on and in 2 weeks no longer scratches herself and scabs have fallen off i can only say do use neem oil, it is brilliant, also if you wipe it on the face around the ears and under jaw, when horse rubs their face against their legs it doesnt transfer like sprays and make their eyes burn.
