I have owned my Collie from 8 wks old to the grand old age of 1yr and 3 months :D he is absolutely fab in everyway but he has always been an extremely fussy eater, sometime he'll not even bother to eat for a day or two ! He's been to the vets and he had a tooth taken out that could have been causing problems but apart from that he's in good health. The problem is that I cannot get weight on him, he's not skin and bones but I would definitely like more weight on him. We have tried all sorts and nothing doing.Has anyone else had this problem or can recommend any high calorie foods for a fussy eater?. Just to clarify it's not that he is eating loads and not putting on weight, it's the getting him to eat and finding food he likes that's the problem!

Thanks :)

I wouldn't indulge him or spoil him too much - put food down, after ten minutes, take it away, offer it again later. He won't starve himself, I'd like to only eat the foods I really, really like, but I'd be either emaciated or obese and be very unhealthy :p
Tripe, raw green or in frozen blocks from big pet stores is stinky but a good conditioner.
Oily fish in sunflower oil or fish oil, veg oil, eggs, added to dry food are also all good.

Thank you! We did try leaving it down and taking away again, but I think he went about 4days without eating anything and as he is already quite skinny I felt awful and had to leave it down and put something more tempting in it. Hmmm...wrapped around little paw come to mind

Vizzie have you ever fed the AG salmon and rice? Any good? I've only fed the lamb and the chicken and will be moving pupper onto a new dry food shortly. I know I should buy Orijen but it is so bloody dear :o

Not tried it as even sensitive dog is fine on their adult lamb and rice. I should imagine its good feed. I've never been able to fault them.

Harley isn't a fussy eater, eats up quick, but is always on the skinny side. I tried Arden Grange Lamb and Rice for a bit and was better, but recently I put him on Fish4dogs and the difference is HUGE! I'd highly recommend it!!

He's always had the odd cans of tuna etc for lunch, cheese/sausages etc for training!!! lol!

Ive tried all the food in the world to keep weight on my seriously hyperactive springer and the only thing that seems to work is table scraps on top of his usual dry food. Im sure ill get shot down for it but it works and hes happy and healthy and finally looks much better

Lots of fatty tripe and chook carcases..animal fat will make animal fat. As a filler you would do just as well to use lots of brown bread mushed in ,rather than waste money on a dried food.

Human food is literally the only thing he is interested in! so we have to mix stuff in with his normal food to try and tempt him, but he's only eating one small meal a day at the moment - can't get any more into him!

My lurcher is a picky eater. True to breed he's a real thief and always has his nose in bags, the bin, or too close to my dinner plate when he thinks I'm not looking. I've found he eats more of his food (Fish4Dogs) if it's a small bin in the corner of the kitchen instead of in a dog bowl because he thinks he's stealing it .

That's hilarious! Bless!
