Whats the best feed to give a fat pony at risk from laminitis please? Shes on poor grazing at moment but needs a little feed to put supplements in so is hi fi lite, happy hoof or high fibre cubes best, im confused!

We used to give our lammy boy happy hoof with his suppliments, literately a tiny bit, and he was fine it, looked really good and kept lammy at bay. Unfortunately when we gave him back to the owners (we only loaned him and sister and I were both getting a little big for him) he passed away that winter, couldnt get up was in so much agony...just goes to show if you treat it properly its kept alright.

thanks, just wondering what has the least sugar/calories really as there are so many differant feeds around now its hard to know which ones the best.

phone up one of the feed companies and ask, I would have thought some sort of anti-lam feedstuffs. I used to feed safe and sound to my small pony, but he did not like the hard bits.
I feed Dengie chaff at the moment, no ,molasses or any thing with sugars, low ME, hi fibre.
I agree with soaking hay to remove sugars. also things like a muzzle, also a starvation paddock. Keep his weight under strict control.
your local feedstore should also advise.
if he is fat you need to slim him down asap.

Make sure any feed you buy has been approved by the Laminitis Trust - it should have a symbol on it showing a rotated pedal bone - very apt!

I feed speedibeet as it provides a lot of fibre in a moist form, so ideal for hiding supplements if horse is picky, and also Dodson & Horrell Safe and Sound - very low calorie. HiFi Lite is approved by the LT, but I think the SafenSound has more added vits and mins.

There are quite a few recommended feedstuffs, so it might just be a case of trying one or two to see what he likes.

One of mine doesn't like soaked hay, so I buy the Marksway Horsehage, either blue or purple for lamis - expensive but low sugar so ideal. I give him half and half sometimes and he always goes for the horsehage as first option.

I've used Safe & Sound and Fast Fibre, prefer Fast Fibre for hiding things in, also as it is soaked it makes a bigger feed for the same amount of dry matter, so keeps busy eating & full for longer :)

You have to work out what works for your own horse - but this is what I feed all mine - including my 2 lamis:

Unmolassed oat straw chaff
Linseed meal - Charnwood, £25 a 20kg bag
Mineral mix - I use the Norvite one, it's a local product specific to our soils in this area which are very low in minerals
Additional Magnesium Oxide
Yea Sac
Brewer's Yeast
Various herbs and spices

Washed hay.

I would feed your pony a handful of Hi Fi Lite (it's lower in sugar and higher in fibre than Happy Hoof) and a supplement (Anti-Lam or Lami-Lite etc) which supports gut function and hooves. Plus soaked hay :)
