Best for keeping dog's teeth clean if you can't brush?

Despite doing all the usual things to get Stanley used to having his teeth brushed, He just won't tolerate it. I noticed his breath was smelly so vet's did a clean under GA but I'm a bit stuck in knowing how to keep them clean. I've used dog chews, fish skin cubes, plaque off powder but nothing seems to work. He's a border terrier and I think they tend to have teeth problems. I've heard about elk milk chews, has anyone used them? Any suggestions gratefully received. As you can see, he has quite a good set of sharp teeth!

I have two BTs, the 4 year old has lovely teeth, the 12 old has poor teeth, he’s had them cleaned under GA twice and had two front teeth removed at 11. He wouldn’t let me brush them (annoyingly the other one would be happy to have them brushed!).

We tried dental food but it caused him to itch like crazy, we’ve tried various chews and powders and nothing works.
 
My older one has an underbite (I think) so doesn’t have a naturally great shaped mouth and his bottom canines push something on the top row. Still he’s got to 12 and only lost two!
 
You can buy a gel that you rub on the teeth daily it's called logic that helps keep them clean.

Winnie had a bad plaque build up and they were pretty bad and my groomer said she could do them, I must admit I was amazed at how clean she got them and she does it without any sedation and she was fine, it was £60 but a quick clean is £40 so I'm just going to keep on top of it now and get her to do them regularly.

Honestly find a groomer to try and do them it's so worth it the vet said it would be £600 and under a GA which I really didn't want for her.

I do sprinkle kelp powder on their dinner as it helps break down plaque as well as the gel.
 
Try an ezyme gel or the Orozyme chews. You could put the gel on a tough/longer lasting chew if he won't accept the finger application option.

Canident seems to work for some (but it pretty much the same as plaque off so probably not useful for yours)

I fed Plaque Off and it did nothing. I now feed all 3 of mine Canident (and the cat), and it has been nothing short of miraculous - all of them now have NO plaque, sweet breath and healthy gums. The cat is 19 and had chronic gingivitis: completely cleared up.

I've got 3 on Canident to see how it goes. 2 look no different at all, 1 is much improved. They're both apparently powdered/granulated seaweed 🤷‍♀️

One has seaweed in it (plaque off), the other is pure seaweed (Canident). It takes quite a long time to work, I think it was 6 months before all of mine were clear, longer for the cat - but he was REALLY gross 🤢

Mine do get hand scaled every month so they're really not bad at all, the one who has a lot of tartar is a rescue who won't tolerate brushing etc. Canident themselves say up to 15 weeks to see results, they've been on it since Dec 1 so about 14 weeks, by their own assertion it should have helped if it will

I used plaque off for ages with little success , swapped to Canident in January and there is a definite improvement. He was due to have a descale earlier this month but vet now want to check him again in another month as she is impressed how much better his teeth are .
 
Bandit will not tolerate having his teeth brushed and I was getting a bit concerned as his teeth weren't looking great. He has been having a chicken wing in a morning and I can see a huge improvement in how good his teeth are looking.
 
i hand scale mine now and again, very gently, feed a very hard bone chew, made a huge difference, so rushed off and got another instock, but the first one is still going after 5 months, cept he keeps leaving i it all over the place so i keep falling over it and finding it in strange places, then sometimes i rub the gums round the canine teeth with a tiny dab of mouth wash to aid the gum

i find keeping a regular eye on the teeth and acting when needed has helped greatly

4 years ago he had 3 teeth removed, but has been ok since home maintenance
 
Thanks for your replies. I'm going to try Canident, his teeth are clean now, hopefully they will stay that way. Also might get elk milk chews or raw chicken wings, not sure which. I know he likes raw chicken wings as I used to have them when he was a pup.
 
Hi All Sorry to revive an old thread! My almost 2 yo retriever is getting fairly plaquey teeth and I'm curious to read about the Canident! Is anyone still using it? Is it worth giving a go?
 
It worked well on one of the 3 I tried it on and did f all for the other 2 (all same breed, on same food)

We've always used it, but in particular we started the then 3yo CKC Spaniel on it when we got her last year (came from bad circumstances), her teeth and breath were rank.
We waited to have her go under for a dental as she'd had a very traumatic surgery literally the day before we acquired her.
Between Canident on her food, Tropifresh in her water and a variety of natural chews, she never needed the dental, and the vet was very impressed at the difference.
I couldn't pinpoint which of those exactly did the job for her, but my 4yo Tibetan Spaniel has always had the Canident and natural chews, and her teeth have always been great, so probably a combination of those!
 
I tried my old boy on canident, starting off with a teeny tiny amount as it recommended to work up to full dose. Well, that teeny tiny amount gave him enormous runny bum! I was cleaning floors and hosing off hindquarters for 4 days before he stabilised, it was bloody awful. I guess some dogs can take reactions to it.
 
Canident does seem to be helping my lurcher. He’s been on it for over a year I think. He did have a scale under GA last year because they were already bad (and he was only three years old, with typical lurcher dry mouth) and since then I’d say the Canident has stopped the plaque returning badly.
 
Canident has worked on my greyhounds and the GSD. I have found that you do also need to give a suitable toothbrush chew of some sort every so often as well. Tripe sticks are the go to for the current greyhound.
