Lets have a vote, Where in the country isthe best hacking? My hacking is really bad and wondered who had the BEST hacking, Variety etc, beaches, forests, open country

It is going to be something to consider when I next move house. I have taken to boxing to farm rides as a substitute for hacking. I'm not sure if the lakes suit my style of hacking, Lots of hills you know :p

Cirencester - for the park! The absolute best hacking I think it's possible to have!

Sorry I don't agree! ;-) I like it (I keep my pony by Ciren Park) but you go round it very quickly as it's not THAT big when you hack for few hours!
I agree it's great when you don't go there very often though...but I hack there 4 times a week in Winter and everyday in Summer...and I get bored of the same scenery at time!
It's nice to see the wildlife though :-)
But I'm sure big forests or mountains would be better!

Not in the UK...but to be honest I prefered the hacking I had in France in the mountains! (I'm French in the UK since Sept 2006 and brought my pony here last year)

:-)

The new forest.

I only have to cross roads and have miles and miles of off road riding. And beaches are only a short trailer ride away. I love it here. :D:D:D

Pembrey Country Park in South Wales - 400 acres of woodland with sand tracks (and lots of strategically placed logs!) which opens out onto a 7 mile beach!

Unfortunatley I don't live there.... :(

But then I do live on the Malvern Hills :-)

I just don't think I could ever get tired of it! Such a range of different places to go - long canters along the avenues, fields to go across, tracks and small paths through the trees (and some jumps!). Even if that gets too boring, then you can just cross the road and then head off on the bridleways towards the waterpark, or out past Sapperton. We regularly have 3 hr plus fast hacks and we cover such a small amount of park it is just silly!!

North York moors - i used to hop from the moors to the beach back through the woods and have a belt up old railway line - bliss! and there were hills - proper hills:D

I really enjoy the long canter/galop which I couldn't do in France! ;-)
I don't think I know where the bridleways are? And is there any off road hacking past Sapperton? (haven't been there that long..well pony has been there since May last year)
Would you mind sending me a PM to explain where these are please?
Thanks!

I agree, there is only so many times you can go somewhere different in Cirencester Park, but it is good off road riding and you can have lots of good blasts!!!

Northumberland for me. We can ride for miles on the moor, have tons of quiet lanes and bridleways and if we had transport we have some fab beaches and great woodland riding too. :)

Laura wheeler i am soooo envious, your photos look fantastic :D We have country lanes with too many fast drivers and an odd few bridle paths so its pretty rubbish tbh. Some of you guys are so lucky :):)

Shropshire hills - stunning open country and spectacular views! Amazing bird life too including red kites, buzzards and sparrow hawks.

Its soooooooo not fair :( we have to hack on roads to get to scabby little bridle paths that are stoney and full of dog walkers and kids. Who's up for putting me up and taking me exploring ;)

Another vote for the North York Moors!!!! We have open moorland one way, beaches the other, cycle routes, bridleways galore and old railway lines. I can't imagine anywhere better, although Scotland looks pretty good too!!!

Although I shouldn't shout about it because there are too many tourists here as it is!!! They wave maps around and leave gates open, and they dare to sit on the beach when I want to ride!!! :) :)

I'm on the edge of the Peak District and if we kept the horses a 15 minute drive from home we'd have access to gorgeous hacking. As it is, both live a 5 minute walk from home, and the gorgeous hacking is a good 40 mins worth of roadwork away. It's worth it once you get there, but it's uphill all the way so by the time you get onto the bridle paths you can't do too much because the horse's are pooped and you have to get them home again! I was took my mare out there for 5 hours and it was gorgeous, but she was whacked when we got home because of the hill work, even though she was as fit as a fiddle at the time.

I grew up in the New Forest and so miss it! We could ride out all day for miles! We loved galloping over the greens! I now live in staffs and our hacking is rubbish in comparison! I am lucky as our yard has a big stubble field for use in the winter and some tracks around the farm with x country jumps to use in the summer! However we do have to ride on roads to get to other off road riding!
