Does anyone have any good DIY fly repellent recipes? Fed up of wasting money buying bottle after bottle of the shop bought stuff, which I don't even think works that well!

I dont think there is anything that really stops them for long :( seems from what I have used that they are getting immune to the smell of things they should not like and are using it as an attractant as they find tasty horses or humans under it

Vinegar & lemon juice seems to work well, along with green tea extracts. Sounds a strange combination I know, but does work, however you need to reapply it every 3-4 hours to really repel them.

I used to buy eucalyptus, citronella and tea tree oil online and add 15 drops of each to a squirt bottle of water. Seemed to work quite well.

This is one I got from a magazine years ago. I don't bother with fly sprays now as horses bring themselves into barn if flies are bad. I think its probably as effective as a lot of bought sprays. The ingredients are :-

a third of a small bottle of citronella,
one teaspoon of washing up liquid,
two to four tablespoons of vinegar,
two tablespoons of methylated spirit,
one cupful of strong cold tea (one teabag),
cold water.
Mix citronella with washing up liquid. Add vinegar and meths. Add cold tea. Top up to make with water to make 2 litres. Decant into spray bottle and shake before using.
