I'm taking my 2 year old filly to a show in a couple of weeks' time. I'd like to use hoof oil on her feet. I'd need to apply it before we go as it's her first show and she'll be leaping around when we get there, no doubt. She has black hooves all round. I tried some absorbine black on anorher horse and, alrhough it stayed on, it looked pretty awful and very fake.

Any thoughts anyone for a hoof oil/dressing that looks more natural and will stay on?

I’m not a huge fan of the coloured hoof oils, I think it looks a bit unnatural. I tried the Keratex hoof shield which is quite good because it almost leaves a varnish effect and you can build on it.

I use the Absorbine black but find it looks best later on, apply at home, leave to dry and then a quick flick over with something clear when you get there.

But, we don’t show!

I used different hoof oil, but the most suitable was a regular clear hoof oil without additives - looks natural and stays normal if applied a couple of hours before release. Black oils like Absorbine I also do not like - they look unnatural and often get dirty around. Sometimes I just rub the hoof with natural oil, like olive, but it absorbs quickly. If you need a good hold, try the combination of hoof oil and a little clear polish - it holds better and looks natural.

Squirt baby oil and let it run down. That's what I use with the youngsters as easy to apply quickly and safely
Thanks for your suggestions, everyone. I have tried the black shoe polish and that worked well to cover up the white periople bit. Now to experiment with shiny. I'm going to try baby oil today, then on to other suggestions. She was really good about having stuff put on her hooves - her older brother is impossible about it, so that was good news.

What colour is she/ her legs? If she's got any white on her then it may be that a clear hoof oil would look better than a black one, however, if she's got completely black legs then I would go for black absorbine.

The black sablene is very good if you like a darker look otherwise use baby oil or traditional hoof oil

Dont use pitch black polish (such as Absorbine) unless its usual for the class - eg show hunter ponies
